This is at my old Uni. My 3 year old loves it. Like a mini Northern Natural History Museum. Would well recommend.

I have really enjoyed Manchester Museum in the past but it felt a bit lacking this time. The Egyptian exhibition was sealed off until October which was incredibly disappointing to me but we did enjoy the Alan Turing exhibition upstairs. I was glad I didn't bring the kids. Despite it being the holidays, there didn't seem to be an awful lot for them to do this time.

Ideal for a rainy day and FREE entry.
Would be well worth an entry fee.
Lots to do and see.
Volunteers do a great job of giving tours and information on display tables.
If this was in another country you'd have to pay. Definitely go to see when the new Egypt section is open!
Lovely gift shop.
In a great location, easy to get to with the buses outside on Oxford Road being very frequent.

Even though I lived in Manchester for over a year, I never even knew the museam was there! But on a trip back we researched things to do, and decided to use up a spare two hours by visiting the museam. It's free to enter, and unlike the London museams, there isn't boxes and signs every two seconds badgering you for 'reccomended donations'- something with greatly improves the experience.

The rooms on animals, fossils and weapons were all interesting, and the small section with live lizards and snakes was an unexpected bonus! Sadly the egyptian exhibit was closed, which also created a problem in getting around- like the science museam in London, the museam is split into two, with a bridge on certain floors giving you access to the other side, and not all floors link on both sides. Due to the 2nd floor bridge being closed, you had to go all the way up to the third floor to get back down to the 2nd and 1st floor on the other side- not a huge issue for us, but probably a pain if you have kids or mobility problems! Due to a couple of the rooms being closed it took us only 2 hours to go round, so you probably couldn't spend a whole day here. If you do want to though, there is a picnic area with vending machines. There is also a cafe you can get to from the main road outside the museam, and a small shop which didn't seem to stock anything very inspiring but is nice to have a look in. Another welcome addition is lockers, which operate on a refundable pound coin basis- great for travellers like us! Overall I would definatley reccomend a visit to the museam on a rainy afternoon or to amuse the kids for a few hours- they will love Stan the T-Rex!
