“Don't forget to pack your ear-plugs!!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 4, 2009

OK, always striving to be positive I will start with Velvet's good points;

LOCATION - great for easy walking distance to the shops/heart of the City
BAR & RESTAURANT - great vibe to the place, lovely friendly staff who really made the whole experience a good one
QUALITY OF ROOM - nice fixtures, finishings & decor
FREE WI-FI

But sadly for us, the over-riding bad point to Velvet is the NOISE!

It's great being in amongst the social scene but we were unable to escape the celebrations once we had returned to the room. Seriously loud music on both weekend nights even with all doors and windows shut. The club 'Queer' runs all night and even until mid-morning (that's no lie!) with it's famous 'Morning Glory' celebrations. Not ideal when both of us were in need of a good nights sleep. It was so bad after no sleep on Friday that I had to go and purchase some ear-plugs and a sleeping tablet to get me through Saturday night.

We did make a point of expressing our concerns on check-out and to be fair to Velvet they did listen however they were also surprised at our comments which makes me concerned that they are not aware of the problem when so many people are writing about it on various Hotel Feedback sites.

We would love the opportunity to return but feel so put off with the noise I'm not sure that we can :(

We stayed here on Friday 30st of October in one of the penthouse, duplex rooms and really enjoyed it. If you are looking for all the facilities and size of a chain hotel then look away but in terms of service, attention to detail and room quality, it was just brilliant.

I was concerned about the noise levels (especially considering we were staying on a Friday night) but being on the top floor obviously made a difference (being slightly drunk did also!). I can imagine the noise from the Velvet bar could be an issue if on a lower floor and wanting an earlier night on the weekend. We settled down for the night around 2am and the noise started to subside. The Velvet bar was really cosy with a great atmosphere. We had breakfast in our room and it was deliciously fresh and varied.

The room was excellent with the mezannie bedroom (bed could have been a little wider), 2 TVs, table and chairs and 2 sofas. A few minutes after checking in, a member of staff arrived with 2 glasses of Champagne, fresh fruit and biscuits - you don't get that from a chain hotel!

All-in-all, I would recommend Velvet as something a little out of the ordinary with a hint of luxury.

Just got back from an amazing time in Manchester staying at Velvet!

Me and my partner go to Manchester every month or so - for a night away to shop and party the night away usually, and we normally stay at a hotel not far away from Velvet. Usually we go there and eat - as the food in the restaurant is fantastic, and the last time we were eating there we discovered that they are also now a hotel.

It was by far the best stay I have ever had - the service on check in, being personally roomed by a lovely young man,and the stunning room that we stayed in were second to none! We even got 2 glasses of champagne on our welcome tray with fresh milk ice biccies and sugar - they seem to have thought about everything....loved the lights in the bathroom that come on as you walk in!

All in all - not a patch on the other hotels I have stayed in - great great place!

As a surprise my boyfriend booked a room in a hotel for one night as a special treat for us both. Seeing as Velvet was number one in Manchester this seemed the obvious choice.
When we checked in, the (one member!) of staff on duty was very polite and showed us to our room. The first floor room was undoubtedly very beautiful if slightly hot. We got ready and had a lovely evening out in Mancheser, returning to the hotel at around midnight. As soon as we entered the room the noise from downstairs was immediately apparent. So much so, at first we thought we had left he TV on. We shut the windows thinking the two sets of windows would block out the ridiuculous noise levels i assumed were coming from the busy canal street, only to realise the noise was coming from Velvet's own bar, directly below us. The music was so loud we could hear every lyric of each song, laughter, screams and individual conversations! My boyfriend went to complain, being told the 'music was coming from a private party and could go on until the early hours.' We obvioulsy realised that noise might be a problem i nthis hotel but not to this level and we were not once pre-warned.
Unwilling to pay the premium rates for a sleepless and irritable night we inevitably would have had, we checked out and went back to our flat, both feeling extremely dissapointed that our night out had to end this way.
We did get reimbursed with our money but the staff were far from understanding and even stated 'the noise wasn't as bad as on a weekend'. If that's the case then I'm surprised anyone ever gets any sleep in this hotel.
If you value your sleep and don't want to waste your money and become extremely irritated DO NOT STAY AT VELVET. An absolute FARCE.

We stayed here last week for the first time , and what a brilliant stay we had. We were allocated 2 mezzanine rooms. These rooms have just everything and I mean everything , the ipod to go radio alarm was such a treat , as was the lovely note to say whilst at supper, they had delivered ice, fresh lemon and lime slices. Dinner was also excellent and just what we needed after such a long drive from Glasgow . The hotel is really beautiful but as always it was the service that really made the stay.

Checking into the Velvet Hotel was like a dream. We were met by a friendly young man from Wales who infomed us that we had been upgraded to a penthouse suite... it would have been rude to refuse!
I had booked a shopping package as a surprise for my partner and we were not disappointed; champagne on ice, complimentary fruit,Selfridges goody bag which contained some gorgeous Issey Meyake products and a £50 Selfridges voucher.
The thoughtful little touches like fresh milk in the mini bar, proper percolated coffee, bathrobes, slippers and a dinky little rubber ducky for the bath put a much needed smile on my face.
After a hard days shopping and a visit to the theatre we relaxed for a nightcap in the hotel bar before escaping to our room to find our bed had been turned down and chocolates on our pillows...bliss!
Well done to all the team at Velvet and thank you for making our stay so memorable

Great hotel right in the middle of Manchester on the famouse Canal Street. The hotel is superb, very welcoming, great rooms with very boutique furnishings and comfortable beds. Busy bar downstairs.
