“Characterful building, good service - I'll stay again”
Reviewed May 17, 2014

I've stayed here a few times on business recently. I like the historic building and the fact that it's features are evident in the rooms (wooden floors, steel columns, original windows). Other positives: Beds are good, wi if is free, coffee in rooms is decent and the bar serves 'punk dog' beer!

The last time I stayed there was a plumbing problem with my bathroom so I got upgraded to an amazing top floor suite (dubiously branded "fabulous on fifth") - a really good response to something that could have left me narked off.

They could improve their clunky tv system, but that's a niggle.

Room Tip: The rooms on the building's corners are nice. The top floor suites are awesome.

I had originally booked comfortable room. I was early to arrive, so the manager offered to upgrade me to a desirable room at 15 pounds a night so that I can check in immediately. I accepted, and goodness me, the desirable room was the most luxurious room I ever stayed in.
The room is tall and large, more than comfortable for two person stay, much less just one person. The bed is comfortable, the 1st floor room is relatively quiet. There is some street noise filtered in, but pretty much negligible (I came during football match day and wasn't woken by any noise). Throughout the rooms it is the small touches that really complete it - Abundance of powerpoints, provision of safe, a lot of hangers, ironing equipment, heated towel rack.
Just a note about the decor. The room had a interesting take on adaptive reuse. You can see the old building in the columns and tiles, mixed with fun wallpaper and furniture. It really made the hotel unique, and I was thankful I chose this instead of a more corporate chain hotel.
The location of the hotel is just two or three steps from Piccadilly station, making travel and shopping very convenient. The room offers laundry service, although I personally recommend heading to the NQ laundrette close by.
Would definitely recommend!

The hotel is conveniently located close to Piccadilly Station and to the main shopping area of Manchester. We drove and as there is no onsite parking parked across the road in the NCP (£14 overnight). The hotel Reception staff were very friendly and helpful.
We were given a room on the 4th floor. The room was well fitted out and clean. Bed comfortable, if just a little low! but this theme seemed to be the norm for the rest of the furniture in the room.
The windows were screwed shut, apparently a listed building requirement! it was a pity as prefer to have natural ventilation. That said this might have been an advantage as were were street side so noise might have been an issue, but choice is good to have.
The en-suite was large but not enough lighting and the positioning of a door stop in the floor in same location were you step out of the shower is painful!!
The one lift is slow and if timed wrong quicker to take the stairs.
I was a bit disappointed as we were looking forward to staying here

Room Tip: Although it was not a significant issue to us i suggest higher back rooms would be quieter

The Abode Manchester is located a really short walk from Picadilly Station and close to the main shopping area of Manchester.
First impressions were good - the Reception staff were very friendly and amenable. Asked if I preferred a higher or lower floor, I chose higher, less probability from any potential traffic noise.
For me, all aspects of a hotel make up the whole experience even to the smallest items and it was the lift that slightly let it down - the slowest lift I've ever possibly been in. You could walk up the wonderful wide timber staircase with glazed tiles walls but, being lazy on the ascent tried the lift. It felt a little underwhelming (if lifts can ever raise your spirit) but the egg-crate light fitting was damaged, the floor finish didn't match anything else in the hotel and it felt a bit better than a municipal car-park however, when the lift doors opened and a fine parquet floor, subdued lighting hit you the contrast was evident and this pretty much sums up the hotel for me. It had some really good aspects to it but didn't always hit the mark with some disappointing contrasts.
The room was spacious, assisted by the exposed ceiling and steel beams which I loved. The bed was huge and really comfortable, the furniture had a 20's/30's feel to it. The view wasn't entirely inspiring but it was high up so little traffic noise and it is city centre.
I liked the style of furniture although maybe a little excessive having 3 armchairs in the room, one part concealing the full-height mirror and the other positioned so that you couldn't sit in the chair at the desk. Removing one of them would have been better.
Whilst I love the open soffit there is the flip-side of how to provide air-conditioning and this is in the installation of a rather tired looking, huge wall-mounted unit which used to kick in sporadically during the night.
Also, there was a strange apparutus system holding up the wardrobe and tv unit/safe of three floor to ceiling posts which looked entirely out of place.
The bathroom was also a let down with vinyl flooring, mosaic tiling that looked unfinished and a towel heater that you couldn't put a towel on without it hanging half off the edge.
That all said, the room was comfortable with decent general overall styling but just didn't hit the mark.

Room cost £165, first impressions of room were very positive. Very large, high ceiling, massive windows, seating area with sofa and large tv, wii etc. All clean and comfortable.
BUT.....room on 3rd floor overlooking very busy main road, Piccadilly. Due to large windows, external noise transmits most efficiently into room. All night, road traffic, emergency services, drunks, singing, bangs, horns.......really disturbing, like having a bed on the side of the road.
Also the large windows did not have full blackout curtains but relied on Venetian blinds. these are most ineffective in keeping out light. I could read a book in bed from dawn.
All in all, a really bad night, intermittent sleep. Checked out by 6.15am!
If staying here request room on back of hotel.

Room Tip: request room at back of hotel, do not overlook Piccadilly

Dear guest,
My appreciation for providing details of your recent stay with ABode. Whilst delighted your first impressions were of a positive nature I am naturally disappointed that despite the hotel having secondary glazing you still endured difficulties in terms of external noise from the main street.
Your comments are noted and I thank you for them.
best regards

Check & reception are very friendly and welcoming
I still do not know what to make of the rooms. Renovated warehouse? Big rooms high ceilings huge bed !!! I did lime what they were trying to do with the deco sort of a industrial style , but so e of the shelves looked cheap paintings looked aged worn down.
Bathroom was spacious with typical amenities . I must admit I had a great sleep!!!
Restaurant was great !!
Breakfast was average. Small continental buffet , and small aka carte. I wa s a little disappoint with the full English quality was good but was very small portion .. I would stay there again but I am sure there are other hotel in the area that offer the same value for less money

My first stay was fine. Positives, great beds, huge in fact, good linens/pillows. I was quick to return. Then...
DISAPPOINTED... room dearer despite same period. Made to pay extra tor same room as a supplement. Food awful. Could have been resolved sensitively, here's a discount off your next stay or meal etc. I have spent a lot.... I got not very far with hotel, so contacted their Michael Caines.... Got nowhere with that either.
To describe it as leaving a bad taste, is a perfect statement, overpriced, over-hyped, and simply HATE the fact that celebrity chefs add their name, a menu and give credance to something it isn't.
I have stayed across Europe, USA, Africa and South America, lived in 3 countries, to 5 star, have cruised on 5 star, but this is a big disappointment. Food-wise 3 star, attitude-wise 0.
Was asked to fill in pages of forms....better things to do with my time.
Would not stay there again, if they paid me to, due to their indifference.
