“Wide selection of chinese food at a reasonable price”
Reviewed August 4, 2012

We went into this restaurant on a Friday evening before seeing a show at the theatre. There was a wide selection of dishes. Starters included shredded duck (which was spot on!) And shredded pork, pancakes, spring rolls, prawn crackers and soup. There was a good choice of mains-sweet and sour chicken, curry, prawn currys, thai curry etc, boiled and fried rice, noodles, chips and sauces. The beef was slightly stringy and at times the chicken was a bit fatty but all in all its nice food. Desserts include ice creams, fruit and cake of the day. The chocolate sauce appears to be watered down tho :(

You can help yourself to tap water at the bar (its warm which is not ideal).

The place is a little lacking in atmosphere. It could do with the volume raising on the music.

Nice waitresses. I would definitely recommend.

“Good food, good prices”
Reviewed May 20, 2012

The Peking Court is a Chinese Buffet restaurant on the edge of Manchester's Chinatown. It is easy to miss because there is only a doorway with a sign above it and some steps lead up to the restaurant area. Disabled access is not good and one of my friends who was in a wheelchair had some problems, but we got her in. The staff were helpful, but a wheelchair lift or a chair lift should really be provided.

The decor is fairly plain - this is not an opulent restaurant with sumptuous seating. Like a lot of Chinese eateries the main point is the food and sharing with friends. The decor is clean, satisfactory and comfortable.

The restaurant is self service and you simply keeping going and filling your plate up as often as you like. There are a wide range of dishes to choose from, 3 types or rice and usually noodles and vermicelli as well. Typical choices are, BBQ ribs, salt'n'pepper ribs, chicken wings, chinese curry, pepper chicken, sweet & sour chicken, beef in black beans, shredded duck, shredded pork and many other usual dishes. Pudding consists of either fruit, jelly, cake, ice cream or all of them if you can manage.

For a group visiting, splitting the bill is simplicity itself since it is a set charge. This varies depending on the day and the time of day. I tend to visit on Saturday evenings when the price is £12 per person. You pay for drinks as you order them.

The staff more or less leave you alone but I have never had any trouble dealing with them and they have always been polite. Nonetheless this restaurant can get very, very busy and can be noisy too. I would not take very small children on a weekend or a night where there is a large event in the City Centre. Teenagers should be OK at any time.

If you are having a group night - like a hen night or stag do - then this is a good choice. For a family night I would go mid week when it is quieter.

One other consideration (and this is true of any buffet restaurant) is that the food is fresher when the restaurant is busy - simply because the food does not have a chance to go stale or dry out.

“Ill today :(”
Reviewed May 12, 2012

MAIN POINTS
Girlfriend was happy enough as she eats meat.
I ate food which looked like it had been there for 3 hours.
Picking hard bits out of my mouth with the Egg Fried Rice.
Egg Fried Rice was severely lacking egg.
Vegetables in Black Bean Sauce - bunch of mushrooms and a couple of other veggies floating on the surface of the dark, watery sauce.
Girlfriend surprised that there were no prawn dishes or duck dishes on display.
Sweet and Sour Sauce was like water and clearly been there for hours, tasted like vinegar and not in the slightest sweet.
Severe lack of quality in the food.
I was i'll today and highly suspect it was the rice or sauce.
Clearly a business done on the cheap and nasty, there is a better one around the corner for the same price range.
