“not overly welcoming”
Reviewed November 24, 2012

Called in after a trip to the shops on a Saturday afternoon, the pub was very busy but we only had to wait about 15 minutes for a table and enjoyed a drink of Copper Dragon in the meantime. We chose the 2 courses for a tenner menu, the starters were imaginative and tasty, could have done with more choice of mains but overall good. The problem was the service which was very slow.

“Top pub grub”
Reviewed November 18, 2012

Have been in here a few times over the past year during site visits for our conference...
Always a warm welcome... good honest pub food ('down south' they'd call it a gastropub) but prices are good... Nice range of beers and popular with locals.

Worth venturing inside...

And there are some cosy B&B rooms upstairs that are quirky in design and not expensive

“Ate here after visiting the MOSI”
Reviewed October 29, 2012

We passed this unprepossessing looking pub which is just across the road from the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry on a Sunday morning. It didn't look much from the outside but I was drawn into the oak beamed establishment by the sight of the cosy looking fire through the window and asked if they did Sunday lunch. I was told they did and advised to book which is always a sign of popular pub to my way of thinking. We spent the morning in the MOSI which I can also recommend for a visit, and returned to the pub around half past one. The landlord recognised us and we were taken to our table and given a menu featuring roast beef, chicken and pork priced at £12.95 for two courses. We ordered two roast beefs and a roast chicken and where pleased with the quality and the quantity, the beefs turning up with an enormous Yorkshire pudding balanced on the top. The chicken came with one too as although it wasn't on the menu we asked for it and it was happily provided. The beef was thick cut and succulent and came with mash potato and goose fat cooked roast potatoes as well as a selection of veg. Sweet, which due to our big breakfast we couldn't manage looked delicious as eaten by other diners. The staff where friendly and the food once ordered was brought quickly. Altogether it was a pleasant dining experience.
