“A cautionary tale for diners”
Reviewed January 5, 2013

This is a tale of how woeful management can let a place down--and prevent repeat custom.

We chose this hotel from among any number of tempting eateries on Chipping Camden High Street for a big lunch with the extended family. First impressions were good as the place has a nice feel to it, and is decorated well.

However, no one greeted us from the hotel reception and we were left to find our own way to a seating area between the bar and restaurant. The limited mobility of some of our more elderly members meant we didn't immediately leave and seek a more welcoming place. Eventually, we found a waitress and then a table in the bar.

Again, a nice environment, but the service was woeful. We rearranged the table ourselves. Our waitress misunderstood parts of our order, and disappeared after serving us (never returning with the condiments we asked for). The bartender saw to the telephone before people standing at the bar. The menu advertised one flavour of risotto while the kitchen delivered another.

The overall problem became evident when I overheard a staff member tell one customer that the usual manager was off sick. Obviously, he or she needs to find adequate cover for such eventualities! Unfortunate, but we'll not be back.

What a shame! We are obviously very sorry that your visit was not as we would hope it to be, yours is only the third two star review in the whole of the last 12 months and we are disappointed, hopefully the other reviews will assure you that your experience was a rare occurrence and we do hope you will reconsider and look forward to welcoming you back again very soon.

We booked 4 rooms for the 3 night Christmas break for a party of 6. We extended 3 of the rooms to include 23rd December as well. Having read the reviews on Tripadvisor before booking and taken the precaution of going to have a look beforehand, as it is 39 miles from home I was still apprehensive. What a fantastic hotel in every way, a real find. The staff were really friendly without being intrusive, nothing was too much trouble. The rooms were spotless with a really comfortable queen size bed, and the food out of this world, Chipping Campden is such a lovely village and the hidden gem of the Cotswolds. The whole Christmas package was truly amazing, the meals were worthy of a michelin starred restaurant, in fact better than. There was so much choice for breakfast we tried most of it between us over the 4 days, can highly recommend the Chefs breakfast special Egg curry with rice and coconut roti. On the first night we ate by the log fire in the bar and chose off the specials menu as well as the restaurant menu, we knew then that we had made an excellent choice for our Christmas stay. Our party enjoyed the choice of real ales in the bar which also catered for the locals, everyone was really friendly. The other guests staying also made Christmas, everyone seemed to agree with us that it was a lovely hotel. We kept finding little presents in our rooms, little gingerbread stars, popcorn to eat whilest watching the Christmas films, Turkey sandwiches at bedtime on Christmas day. Then the day we were leaving, a pot of the Sri Lankan chef's homemade Chutney, which is delicious. We joined guests at the sister hotel in it's garden for a falconery display on Boxing day, complete with mulled wine or hot chocolate. The wasn't anything that any of us could fault at all, and I can't wait to go back again.

Stayed as part of a NYE package. Welcome was very attentive and the hotel had a lovely atmosphere. The room was pleasant and reasonably well appointed.

NYE Gala Dinner in the sister hotel was fun and the food well presented and interesting, although the venison was over cooked for my liking and it was a shame that there was not enough cutlery to lay out for all courses!

The entertainment shut down bang on 1 am which was a shame.

The breakfast on the next day was well cooked but let down badly by cafeteria style tea and coffee from urns, a big downer to end a great NYE break.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back would be the best

We stayed here for one night on 27 December 2012 and from the minute we arrived we were made very welcome. We had booked two double rooms and were informed on our arrival that we had been upgraded to superior rooms (rooms 8 and 11). My husband and I had room 8. Our room was spotlessly clean and very spacious and the bathroom was lovely!

We also booked a table in the restaurant in advance (which at £25 per person, we felt very reasonable). The food was exceptional! We had recently eaten at the Ivy Restaurant in London, and one of our party had ordered a very similar main course (the Monkfish and Seafood Curry) to what she had had at the Ivy. Her comments were “this knocks spots off the curry that I had in the Ivy!” Compliments to the chef!

We will definitely return, hopefully for longer!

A big thank you to the Noel Arms Hotel for a very comfortable, relaxing stay in not only a lovely hotel, but also a very beautiful village!

What a wonderful review, our chef is twice winner of curry chef of the year so as well as all the usual local delights we always offer a curry or two guests are often surprised to find such a great curry in the heart of the Cotswolds alongside the best local dishes in the area, we look forward to welcoming you back again very soon, don’t forget to book a treatment at our sister hotels spa (The Cotswold House Hotel 30 seconds walk away) do call us direct to make you next booking as this will ensure you get the best possible rate.

3 night stay between Christmas and New Year. The staff in all areas were great, relaxed, charming and helpful. The hotel was full to bursting, not only with guests but local people eating and drinking and all was managed with good humour and good service. On day 2 my room was changed from one on the front, which I found noisy (both from the road and the bar) with minimum fuss. The food is excellent and well priced. The sitting areas are small and hopefully there are plans to give the reception, hallway, stairs, a lick of paint. This hotel manages to make you feel very comfortable and welcome with a team of staff who really seem to want to serve you. The manager was a constant presence, not only managing but mucking in as well. A real treat and would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone.

Just realised I hadnt reveiwed my last visit to this hotel back in August. Couldnt get away for a proper holiday this Summer as I was a "Gamesmaker" at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff. How to make it up to the other half? 3 nights at the Noel Arms might do it!
Great little hotel in a lovely part of the country. Had a great room overlooking the car park at the rear. Good welcome and they took the trouble to show us to our room. The little coffee shop was as good this time as it was last time..What a choice of cakes!
Decided to eat in the bar every night as the we liked the menu and it was good value.(and the Olympics were on the TV) Food was fine and service at the bar was much better than average.
Cant fault any of the staff at this hotel. They are invariably cheerful and helpful. My wife left her handbag on the table in the bar when we went to our room. She realised this as soon as we put our things on the bed. There was a knock on the door and there was the barman with the handbag( so I guess it helps to charge drinks/food to the room).
Its my intention to revisit for a short break in 2013.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the rear to avoid traffic noise.
