We stayed at the Sun some years after I was at university in Lancaster. At that time, it was a somewhat forgettable pub.

Now it is a fabulous little hotel and superbly placed for all of Lancaster's attractions.

The welcome we received was very friendly, including seeing us to our room and giving us all the information we needed.

The room, 12, was small as might be expected from an older building, but the bed was very comfortable and the shower very powerful! The only slight negative might be that the room is above part of the bar and therefore does get a little noisy. You may wish to make sure you have a quieter location. The bar does get busy, in fact it seemed to by the busiest in town that night! Plenty of real ales available.

Breakfast is served to a convenient 11am on Saturdays. The hotel does recommend pre-ordering the night before, however we didn't bother and had no problems. Plenty of coffee, juice etc is available and the choice of hen or duck eggs is an unusual twist.

Overall, a big thumbs up, we'd happily stay again.

The Sun Hotel and Bar is one of the oldest buildings in Lancaster, but has been fully refurbished. History without the pain, if you like! We arrived late one evening (they lock up at 1am), and the bar was heaving with night-outers having a good time. We thought that it would be noisy in the bedroom, but actually it was very quiet indeed. The bedroom was adequate, the showerroom ensuite excellent, and there was tea and a caffetiere and ground coffee provided in the room. Also, heating and a fan if needed - we didn't. The window in our room was stuck, but we slept very well (plenty of comfortable pillows, etc) and in the morning we were told that the window should open freely, and they would be checking it out. Breakfast (8 til 11) was included in our online deal, which also gave us a £5 discount voucher for food and/or drink during the stay (which I wish I'd spent on decaff coffee, which wasn't a standard option in the included breakfast - it wasn't expensive, I just didn't notice the option was available). There was a range of breakfasts available: the included option was great, but you could pay to have almost anything you could possibly fancy. They had about 20 different coffees, for instance.

There were quite a few stairs, so I'd check if that might be a problem for you. In fact, Lancaster might be a problem for you, actually.

There is no free parking provided, and the charges start at 8am on the street outside the hotel. Again, ask what the best options are, there are a few longstay car parks around.

Just got back from a stay at the sun hotel and bar.

Stayed in £80/ night inc breakfast room (rm 23 above the bar 1st floor left hand side)

    Plus points:
    * very close (easily walkable) to train and bus stations, town centre and castle
    * staff ALL friendly and efficient (and all young and good looking too!!!)
    * lancaster well placed for lancashire, north yorkshire and cumbria
    * Breakfasts really nice and good choices like eggs benedict and kippers available
    * Hotel impecably clean in bedroom, bathroom and communal areas too
    * Lunches / Dinners nice, lancashire hotpot, chicken broth and platters all excellent
    * Lots of 'different' drinks available... liked the organic cider but lethal! (7%)
    * The hotel and bar were nicely decorated and well maintained inside and out, nice touches like lcd tv in room and heaters in beer garden made it even better

    Issues?

No problems really but for balance I'll be picky and say what wasn't perfect...

    - there was noise outside until gone 12 midnight (but not much later) which to be fair should be expected in a central location. It was only loud when I had the window open
    - no chips or wedges on the menu!
    - would've given the hotel 5* if our room had a bath rather than a shower (the shower was vey nice though)

I don't know if we'd visit Lancater again, but if we do we will certainly stay and I'd certanly recommend it to others

We stayed at the Sun Hotel for one night as a stop over on our way to Scotland. We booked a small room via Late Rooms, and although it was a very small room it was very comfortable. There were a few bad points i.e. dusty and a broken toilet seat however was mainly positive. The staff were friendly, and as it was a hot day provided a fan which was very useful as would have been very stuffy without. The breakfast was included in the price and very nice. The actual bar area is lovely, with nice furniture and stone walls.

The surrounding area is ok, but not very much to do. We ended up at the local Vue cinema following a meal at Bella Pasta.

A great stay. Stayed in a an Exec room £70. Nice inside quite modern. The pub downstairs is great - great renovation with original features - beer garden was busy.

Key thing was not being able to hear the pub - really not an issue.

Service was great - efficient and friendly.

Really recommend the breakfast - the local Homemade Potato scones were very tasty.
