Somehow managing to be hidden away in the centre of Lancaster it's a lovely little cafe sitting on the edge of the little sun square. Not many seats so fills up fast (especially on Saturdays) but the little upstairs area is the place in Lancaster to relax in the week with brilliant coffee and quirky furniture. The staff are very knowledgable and friendly (there's a big list of different coffees/teas to try and they'll enthusiastically talk you through them if you happen to ask). Unfortunately the only thing to do afterwards is to go around the corner to their coffee roasters and spend all your money on freshly roasted beans. Am much poorer as a result now.

Bang in the centre of Lancaster, down a little ginnel, the Music Room is situated on a quiet little square surrounded by Georgian buildings. The coffee is excellent and the cakes rich and yummy, although quite expensive at £2.50 a slice. Not many tables, so fills up quickly. On a sunny day, it is pleasant to sit outside on the square. The coffee is roasted in their parent company, Atkinson's, around the corner and surpasses every other cafe's offerings in the whole of Lancaster. Pleasant staff. Well worth a visit and it's great to be able to support a local business instead of anonymous chains.

Called in to try the recently awarded prize winning 'flat white' coffee. It was great, not the bland over-milky latte styled coffee I was expecting. This packed a punch. So did the Rhubarb Bakewell tart.
The place is small and though functional and tidy not noteworthy, but in a lovely building. Unfortunately the recently restored Music Room is upstairs and private.
Hard to find if you haven't been there, so check a map.
Despite this it is high on my list for visits to Lancaster.

I had a lovely tea and vegan cake here! I can't have dairy products so its great to find a cafe that serves dairy free food and drinks! Lovely environment and nicely tucked away from the hustle and bustle! The staff were friendly and quick! I'll definitely be going again!!

Stick clear of the chains on Market Street and bob down the alleyway to Sun Square. The Music Room is owned by the Landmark Trust and is a truly fabulous Georgian building, where you can rent the upstairs rooms.

However the square is quiet and a difficult place for a business. But that's changed. Ian Steel and the team from Atkinsons are working miracles in the city and they've turned it into a fantastic coffee shop to match the wonderful building.

The coffee is as good as I've ever had plus a delightful chocolate brownie, and all in wonderful, comfortable, peaceful surroundings. A joy.
