Owner description: Owned by the serving monarch, HM Queen Elizabeth II, through the Duchy of Lancaster, Lancaster Castle is a wealth of English history. Since being established by the Romans the castle has been a home to monarchs, a place of trial and execution, and a working prison right up until 2012. Still a crown court, the majority of the castle is now open to the public for the first time in over 1,000 years. Since its opening in 2013, the Castle is gradually developing its offer of tours and events, as well as offering a cafe and gift shop in the grounds.

Very good guide and extremely interesting tour. Couldn't go into all the normally available areas, but this didn't detract from the enjoyment.

“Very interesting”
Reviewed April 24, 2013 via mobile

Lancaster Castle is not the usual castle where kings and queens and pricessess live. It used to be a prison and currently there are courts in session at the castle. In order to enter the castle you need to pay for a guided tour which was 5 pounds for adults and 4 pounds concession price for students. The guides are very knowledgeable and there are very interesting histories and stories that I'm sure most of us would enjoy listening. The rooms for viewing are quite limited since the castle is in use as courts. No photography allowed i the castle. I enjoyed it very much.

We saw the changing of the sheriff ceremony, spoke with the police on horseback followed by an excellent and informative tour of the castle carried out in a pleasant and professional manner.

“Great tour.”
Reviewed April 21, 2013

The Castle tour was excellent. The guide was approachable and very knowledgeable. There was a brilliant insight into this building that has also been used as a prison. The tour was also very inexpensive.

“Great way to spend a couple of hours”
Reviewed April 15, 2013

If you are in Lancaster, like history, have kids, and have a couple of hours, then do the Castle Tour. At 35 each it was great value. Our guide was terrific with a great blend of knowledge and humour. Dates and history were rolled out, as were some interesting snippets. Do you know why we take to oath as we do when in court?....Where does letting the cat out of the bag come from?
