“very good hotel but use a satnav to get there”
Reviewed January 25, 2010

The hotel was lovely, big clean room, comfortable beds, good food (I really liked the vegetarian risotto), good service
However I followed the hotel site's directions and became totally lost. The simple directions are from junction 33 of the M6 take the A6 towards lancaster. When you get to the Boot and Shoe and the traffic lights turn left. Follow the road until you reach a roundabout then take the left turn. After a few miles you go past a gold course and the Stork. You then reach a humpback bridge and then turn left
Please be aware that they are supposed to stop the orders for food at 20:30

Stayed for one night while visiting family recently after getting an amazing deal through a late booking site.
Our room was simply but nicely furnished, with plenty tea/coffee supplies and even a few chocolates (maybe a Christmas treat?!) . There were plenty towels in the bathroom and our shower was great.

We had dinner which was in my opinion "good pub" style food - homemade rather than microwaved - your choice of steak/potato/veg combo approx £13, traditional lasagne or pie type meals about £9 or jacket spuds with fillings for about £6. Sadly we were too full for dessert.

Breakfast the next morning was fantastic - buffet with cereals, real ham, selection of nice cheese (not chedder and babybel!), fruit and juices plus several cooked to order options.

I would definitely like to stay again, hopefully for a couple of nights next time :)

We stay at the Mill as often as possible for short breaks. It is next to a canal lock out in the country in a lovely setting. It is a friendly little place and the food is first class. We would highly recommend it.

We stopped in early on a saturday evening on the return leg of a walk from Galgate to Glasson Dock along a picture-pretty stretch of the Lancaster Canal. We were only going to eat if we liked the look of the place, and a canalside table and some attentive service ensured that we did.

I has shoulder of lamb - an unusual cut for ant retaurant, never mind an out-of-the-way one like this - with mustard mash, and my companion had something vegerariany. Both were delicious, the lamb cooked to the point where it slid off the bone and strongly flavoured with mint and rosemary.
The puddings, amazingly, were all under a fiver, so I feared the worst for the quality, but my chocolate torte was worth twice its price. The companion's sticky toffee pudding was solid and adequate, and best of all cheap.

So for two of us, eating well in a wonderful setting, it was less than £30. Service was just a little bit scrappy, but not in any way that mattered, so there is no real downside.

As has been pointed out previously the hotel is outside Lancaster but for us that was a bonus as it is in a lovely quiet setting with a lovely view from the room.

Also being remote there is no traffic noise - indeed almost the only noise with the windows open was the water in the lock outside the room.

I said almost with the noise - and this next comment is no reflection on the hotel - but our slumber was woken very early (06:30) on the Saturday morning by the patter of two sets of toddlers feet running, or stomping, around in the room above us - a noise that continued for over an hour and a half. Why can't parents be bothered to control their children - especially when in a hotel.

The room itself was very spacious with a huge bed - possibly a super king.

The food in the evening was excellent - certainly amongst the best we have sampled in a pub environment in many a long time and the waiting staff were efficient and courteous. the food was also excellent value for money.

Indeed all the staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful.

Breakfast was OK - the sausages were only just cooked enough - it is interesting to not that almost everyone left their sausage. On the second day I went for the smoked haddock and that was an absolute delight - proper smoked haddock not the yellow dyed variety.

The only negative, which being a business trip was a negative, was both the ethernet in the room and the wi-fi in the bar were not working properly.

However the positives outweigh any minor negatives and this hotel is on the small list of establishments I would happily visit again.

We booked this hotel at the very last minute. We saw it on another website, called up and the lady who answered the phone was so helpful. We are a family of four, with twin boys (two and a half), so need a big room with space for all of us to fit in. The lady who took the booking (Susan) was clearly a) well trained in customer service and b) a geniunely nice person, did all she could to ind a room to acomodate our needs.

It is true that the hotel isn't 'in' Lancaster, but this is clear from the website we looked at. However, I wouldn't say it is fair to state it's miles away, at worst a (pleasant) ten minute drive. Plus the beauty of it being out of the city was the tranquil location. Right on the canal.

Parking was easy. A fantastic play area for the children (a god send with very active boys). Excellent food. Friendly staff. Very reasonable room rate (£50 per night inc breakfast). Great size room - tea making facilites, flat screen tv, plenty on hanging space and drawers. Great bathroom. Peaceful.

The only negative was creaking floors, but this is a converted Mill, with lots of the original beams.

I really can't fault this place and it is superb for families with young children. 10/10
