We chose because it was halfway to Glasgow. We stayed on the way up & on the way back. We were so lucky to find such dedicated excellence. Everything gets our five stars. Most of the reviews mention things like the carrot cake on arrival, the brilliant furnishings and the incredibly comfortable bed-all the 5 star reviews time & again support this view. Actually the breakfast was the the best we have ever been offered anywhere. So if you want to stay near Lancaster then you HAVE to stay here !!

Room Tip: we had the large room with double wet room shower !!! But I think all the rooms offer something spe...

We always try and spend some time here on our visits to Lancashire. Our two-night stay was as good as ever, from the warm welcome, complete with wonderful carrot cake and glass of wine, to the comfy bed and excellent breakfasts. As you arrive through the entrance, the peaceful atmosphere takes over, and this never fails to soothe after braving the worst that motorways can dish out these days. We wouldn't want to stay anywhere else!

Celebrated our anniversary here after reading the reviews - glad we did as everything that folk have said is right! Arrived earlier than anticipated - not a problem. Warm welcome by James and Elvis (the cat), tea and freshly brewed coffee and the best carrot and pineapple cake ever. Happily ate whilst watching the squirrels and robins in the garden. Had a downstairs room - lovely, with quality furnishings and tastefully decorated. The little extras where fab - particularly the "little something in the ice bucket" chocolate coated strawberries (wow they were good!), delicious biscuits and best of all REAL milk! Loved the bathroom - particularly the under floor heating and one of the best showers ever. Hubby preferred the bath - interesting really as he's 6' 3" but we both agreed that the candles, quality toiletries, cotton towels and dressing gowns meant we really didn't want to leave! Breakfast is amazing - fab choice and quality. Best "full English" ever - and being well travelled that says everything. Thanks James,

I echo the other reviews, hotels should be run like this. A warm welcome, lovely reception rooms, well-thought out room with quality furnishing and very comfortable bed, and brilliant generous breakfast the next morning. An imaginative fruit salad, good bakery items, good not cheap tea, well brewed coffee. It's certainly worth breaking your journey for this. I think I'll be back next year and do that walk across the sands at Morecambe Bay. I'll need a haven after that!

Room Tip: The house is well set in its grounds so I would think it wouldn't matter which room you were giv...

If you are going anywhere near Lancaster , you must not miss this place. It is just beautiful with a huge amount of thought given to everything . The decor is different and tasteful and the whole place is just very welcoming. The owner should run master classes for all small hoteliers because he is doing it very well.

Room Tip: we had a down stairs room which was huge with a large bathroom with grand bath and large shower. Dou...

Stayed 2 nights at The Ashton; fantastic owner James greeted us with coffee, wine and banana and sultana cake before showing us to the attic room. The room has everything you require and more - lots of finishing touches i.e coffee, tea, hot chocolate and home made biscuits and real milk in the fridge (rather that UHT); candle burner with lighter, under-floor heating in bathroom; dvd player; black out blind to sky lights, comfortable pillows; water and sweets in room and the best body wash REN I have ever smelt. The breakfast was amazing and the décor stunning. James has definitely put his heart into every room; peaceful and amazing - Went to The Borough for an evening meal (James' recommendation on his website)- you need to book - beautiful meal in a busy pub; really enjoyed out stay at The Ashton - stunning and will be back.

Dear Penny,
Always brings a smile to my face when I hear someone had a great stay. Glad you appreciated the little extras in the room - I put in the things I like to find when I'm away from home.
Be great to see you again & next time try The Nice Bathroom, no star gazing but the largest roll top bath for blissing out in.

The Ashton was found by accident as it was next door to the Lancaster Brewery where we had booked a tour.
What a happy accident!
As soon as we walked in we were welcomed by James (our host) and asked whether we would like some carrot cake and a drink - wife - a pot of tea, me a glass of red wine.
The rooms were absolutely out of this world with some exceptional small touches which make all the difference - bottles of water in your room; tea or coffee facilities (the latter a small cafetiere not coffee packets); biscuits; nice shower and best of all a comfortable big bed.
My wife's comment summed up this great place - ' I could happily live here!'
Breakfast was sumptuous and meant that we had to have a smaller lunch later on this day.
We would heartily recommend The Ashton to friends, family and anyone else who is looking to stay in the Lancaster area and would not hesitate to return if we are again in the vicinity.
As indicated in other reviews James is the perfect host.

Room Tip: If all the rooms were like the one we stayed in any would suffice.
