“School dinners!”
Reviewed February 17, 2014 via mobile

Went with the children for a half term 'treat' for lunch. Ordered the Shepherds Pie (£9.50) Was served a tiny kids sized portion in a metal bowl, which tasted like my school dinners of twenty years ago!
Service was poor. Had to ask for the table to be cleared several times. There were plenty of staff. Very few other tables to be served. I am not sure what they were doing?? Perhaps they were having to cook that day as well as serve the tables??

I am so sorry it has taken us a such a long time to respond but we have been busy trying to put things right and get a lot more consistent in our kitchen and service levels because things had begun to slide. We have a new Head Chef starting this week with bundles of experience within Peach Pubs, creating amazing dishes and we have done lots of training with our front of house team so I really hope you give us another go,
Maybe during the Easter holidays, so we can demonstrate these changes. Thank you for your feedback ensuring we keep on our toes.

“Sunday Roast is Sunday Best”
Reviewed February 16, 2014 via mobile

The age old dilemma of where to go for a great roast dinner has just been answered....go here !

We turned up after much debate as to where to go for a 3pm roast after a lazy Sunday morning of jobs and reading the paper. It may just be me but there are few things I find more annoying than going out and having the 'sorry, we've run out of roast dinners' conversation, so I knew we were onto a winner when we were given our Sunday menus with a choice of 5 roasts, along with a selection of specials. The specials weren't needed as we decided on beef and pork, with extra sides after a little salad starter.

The starter salad was delicious, perfect size with a softly poached egg on top, along with a well looked after pint of IPA it was the ideal start to dinner. Then onto the roasts, perfectly cooked beef, tender and flavoursome, beautifully cooked roast pork, smooth purée, crispy roast potatoes and a giant of a Yorkshire pudding ! The leek and cheese gratin side was moreish and the stuffing balls got polished off in seconds flat, we finished feeling full and very very happy.

A lovely coffee and a reasonable bill followed, finishing what felt like a self indulgent and well spent afternoon.

The next time I'm deciding where to go for my Sunday dinner I'll know where to turn...thanks Star and Garter, I'll see you again soon !

Thank Jonathan C

“Great menu choices”
Reviewed February 1, 2014

Was there on a Tuesday evening as a party of eight business colleagues. Busy evening but service was attentive with a wide ranges of choices from a gasto pub menu from traditional roasts to grazing boards, fish to risotto's. Well presented plates with tasty ingredients. Thanks for a great evening.

“Anything want unless you want it fried”
Reviewed January 18, 2014

met some friends following an offer they had. Arrived early and were shown our table, actually could have been any it was so empty.Asked if we wanted anything. When friends arrived drinks ordered. It was then we were told no chips as fryer not working. Order placed and shortly after was asked how I would like the confit. Strange. Then came back again and said one of the choices could not be had as it involved using fryer. When food came it was ok as far as starters were concerned. The mains also were ok. The exception was my wife's which was was supposed to be Moroccan stew with cauliflower fritters. Surprise no fritters just a big pile of cous cous. Not mentioned about omission.
Would we go back - doubtful
