“Slow service but good food”
Reviewed October 26, 2013

We visited this restaurant as a party of 11 including two small children at 1 o'clock. While the waitress was very attendant bringing us drinks etc, the main course took one and a half hours to arrive which is too long when there are small children. The waitress received no help when bringing out the plates. The restaurant was not particularly busy for a Saturday. The food was actually quite good and between us we had a good cross section of the menu.

“dreadful”
Reviewed October 24, 2013

I was invited by friends for a meal at the boat inn ( Catherine de Barnes ) as I hadn't eaten there before I was looking forward to it. The food was mediocre and the service was dreadful. The staff appeared to be more interested in talking to each other, than looking after their customers.

“Good all round choice of meals - well presented.”
Reviewed October 21, 2013

We have been to this pub type restaurant several times over the last year and never had a bad meal. The meals are inventive and there is something for everyone. The prices are reasonable and good value for money. I had the chicken breast with peppers etc. One of our party had the steak and was not disappointed. I had a side order of seasonal vegetables; this was served piping hot in a side dish, but not over cooked. All of our meals were served hot and not luke warm. It is so important for meals to be served hot, otherwise we do not go back again! This pub chain (Chef and Brewer) have definitely got it right.

“Sunday Lunch”
Reviewed October 20, 2013

Went for Sunday lunch. Both beef and turkey dinner absolutely swimming in tasteless gravy. Husbands yorkshire pudding was burnt. Have had some fabulous meals here previously, not been for about six months and will not be going again in a hurry.

“Management slip up”
Reviewed October 20, 2013

We had booked for an early Sunday evening meal, on the basis of a personal recommendation, before going to a concert at the LG Arena and arrived exactly on our allotted time. However, it had been an uncharacteristic sunny Sunday in September and they announced that there would be a 45 minute wait for food because they had been serving extra covers in the garden.

It was too late for us to try finding somewhere else as the time taken to re-locate and order would probably soak up that delay (and there was always a chance they would be quicker than they said)

We decided to order mains only and see if we had time for anything else. The food took 50 minutes to arrive and so we had to ditch the desserts. There was nothing wrong with the food and everyone wished that we had more time to stay and eat more.

It is a shame that amateurish management can spoil an event like this but I suspect that once you have made the error it is difficult to recover the situation. It seems quite simple to stick to the number of covers you can actually deal with and not get carried away by the prospect of raking in more money because in this instance you only got part of it.
