“Not a good example of a Hilton”
Reviewed October 31, 2006

Booked a mini-break at the hotel, then read the reviews listed on TripAdvisor, was a little concerned but too late to do anything about it.

Check in was very efficient, reception area clean and staff attentive.

The room was modern, smaller than average, but liveable for a few days.

That about covers the positives.

The bathroom had a terrible odour that lingered, the standard of cleaning was not perfect. The carpets had stains on and pillows did not smell fresh.

Had to complain as the heating system drowned out the sound from the tv for two hours solid, was told that a porter would be sent up to try to fix the problem. Ten minutes later and the heating goes quiet, re-contacted reception only to find out that the porter had not been told of the problem anyway.

We left the radiator turned off, but that did not stop the heat, opened the windows but due to the nearness of the outside cooling system and limited space that the window could be opened, we received little fresh air but lots of additional noise.

In the end after being unable to sleep checked out at 2.30am, and went home, took a couple of hours but at least in the end we were able to sleep.

The hotel I believe, is more suited to business conferences, for a base to be used by tourists probably not. The hotel is quite a way to the nearest town, the hotel restaurant is difficult to get a table at if there is a conference on, the bar also gets rather crowded so for a relaxing, peaceful break best to look elsewhere.

We stayed at the hotel at the end of October for a golf break which we booked through golfbreaks.com.

We were anxious about our visit because of some of the previous reviews for this hotel but we need not have worried - our stay was great. The rooms were clean & comfortable, staff were friendly and helpful and the meals, which were part of our package, represented really good value for money.

The golf course was excellent and we shall certainly go to Puckrup Hall to play again.

Booked for a few days over October half term and after reading some reviews on this site, felt a bit uneasy as to whether we had done the right thing! However, our stay was absolutely fine. At check-in we were given an upgrade as the hotel was extremely busy at this time of year....we were delighted when we discovered we had been allocated a suite with views of the golf course and complimentary wine and chocolates! Staff were both friendly and efficient and overall the hotel was clean and tidy. We ate at the Balharries restaurant just once which was OK if a little pricey although the wine prices both here and in the Terrace Bar are way overpriced....cheapest bottle £20 in the restaurant and £17 for 2 large glasses in the bar!Breakfast each day was really good with plenty of food available whatever time we arrived to eat. Our kids enjoyed the pool although they could do with having an adults only period as some people were obviously not happy having to swim around kids. Husband and son played golf and said course was good. Overall then, an enjoyable stay and would definitely return.

  • Liked — Easy to get to from motorway. Given upgrade on arrival
  • Disliked — Bar prices!
  • Tips/Secrets — Worth asking for upgrade on arrival as they will try and accommodate if possible
