The centre of Tewkesbury, like other Gloucestershire towns, is no place for foodies - at least at lunchtime - if our recent experience is anything to go by. Perhaps we should have realized that the Bay Tree was not a promising option when we entered to find one other customer sitting over a pot of tea and no serving staff in evidence. The menu's claim that everything was cooked on the premises was completely undermined by the arrival of a 3663 driver who duly delivered a number of packages. Presumably these contained items like the two tasteless pies we had unwisely ordered, one of which, a cottage pie which the restaurant claims is its most popular dish, had about three inches of mashed potato atop the smallest amount of meat imaginable, and of the texture of baby food. The staff seemed vaguely surprised that anyone should want to eat there. Avoid at all costs.

I was very interested that this customer did not like the cottage pie, which is made with fresh minced beef from the local butcher (Halfords) fresh vegetables and fresh maashed potatoe. The dish is 3 1/2 inches deep, and it is 2/3 meat and topped with mash and grilled cheese. Yes, Cottage Pie is rather like baby food, that is because the meat is minced and the vegetables chopped. I think Ghastly is rather over the top, as I sell about 20-30 cottage pies every week and have had delighted customers for the past three years.
Wityh regard to deliveries from wholesalers, If you have ever run a restaurant you would be aware that deliveries from suppliers of groceries, like 3663 is necessary if you are running a food business - they deliver butter, ice cream, flour (for my home made cakes) sugar, tea, silver foil, and all the other general items required to cook (Tesco supply the same stuff but it is better delivered to my door). They also supply soft drinks, teas, coffee and some dairy products. We also buy green groceries from Woodys, locally, Eggs from Over Farm Shop and sausages and bacon from local farm suppliers.

The other pie mentioned was either chicken, made with fresh breast of chicken cooked with mushrooms, leeks and cream with a touch of white wine and topped with a freshly cooked puff pastry top (yes, pastry is supplied from 3663 or Elite Foods), or the vegetarian pie which is courgette, onion, mushroom, butternut squash and carrot with mozarella cheese and cranberry sauce, also topped with puff pastry. I start cooking at about 8am every day.
I would also like to state that staff are instructed that if anyone does not like their meal and tells me what the problem is I am only too happy to either replace it or not charge them- this has happened two or three times in three years and I have not charged anyone who has been unhappy with their meal.

The Bay tree charges are reasonable for home cooked food, most of the dishes are about £7, not exactly Savoy Grill prices, and as I have said, if anyone is unhappy with their food, they do not have to pay for it (provided they dont clean the plate and then complain- which has also happened once!!)
Thank you for those who have enjoyed our food and and have told us so - we do the best we can, and get it right most times, but sometimes we are not perfect - who is?

Same ambience, simple menu but good choice, clean, tidy and value for money. Hand cut well cooked chips, good omelette, partner loved his English muffin with bacon and egg. Can recommend to visitors to Tewkesbury as there were many today. Small selection of gifts and cards.

Really good food and service in an excellent location. The restaurant and shop were very clean and the variety of food was good for children and adults. Very nice.

Food was excellent, sourced locally and served in clean and comfortable surroundings. How many places can you get five different main course dishes all served at the same time and all hot still. Would recommend to anyone visiting Tewkesbury to eat here. What a small restaurant should be like.

Quality of the food was excellent, sadly it is changing and I believe it might now be on the market
