Description: The Guildhall in Walsall's Old Square is an imposing old building which dates all the way back to the 16th century. Now a Grade I listed gem, the site has been converted into a lively neighbourhood Italian restaurant and the never-ending dining room is crammed with tables of all sizes, fairy lights and an open-plan kitchen where chefs are hard at work tossing pizzas in the air. Live music & Italian music is played at Sofia's, adding to the upbeat atmosphere, and the menu is filled with old-fashioned favourites and also traditional English Favourites such as afternoon tea and Sunday Roast

Decided to eat here after a day out after hearing how nice it used to be. We should have realised walking into the restaurant it was a bad idea. It was Sunday tea time and we were the only people in there and it was freezing. I had fishcakes to start in a tomato sauce, the fishcakes were cold in the middle and it tasted like they had just poured a tin of chopped tomatoes on the top. They had brought us the smallest piece of bread in a basket on the side, I tore a bit off and threw the rest back in the basket, that too was awful and was difficult to swallow. For main I ordered a chicken bake. After waiting 1 hour I was expecting it to be lovely, after all the chef had 1 hour to cook 2 meals there was nobody else there! I was wrong! My chicken bake didn't even have real chicken in it it was processed! I left it all and the waitress just came and took it away she didn't even ask why I hadn't eaten it. A sign she probably knew just how shocking the food was. Then the bill came and they should have come wearing a balaclava, they had changed us £5 for a service charge and just as much for the bread, we could have bought loaves for what they charged. My advice, stay away and order a pizza!

“Nice food tad expensive”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 15, 2013

We came here in a group as it was my boyfriends birthday. I cannot say like other people who have left reviews that the service was poor. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food was delivered fast and was very nice. Unlike a lot of resturants the interior was unique and made the meal even better. Although i will say the price was steep for 5 of us costing around £110 it was still good but not worth such a high price.

“What can I say.... Disappointing is an under estimation.... :(”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 28, 2013

Where to start with Sofia's.........
Well, me and my girlfriend decided to visit Sofia's off the back of a recommendation from my girlfriends boss ... Usually he is good with restaurants but this time he crashed and burned...
Both me and my girlfriend like to go out to eat so we decided on this restaurant...
On arrival, the building was nice, it looked the part so we were optimistic and looking forward to our dinner . Unfortunately this was the beginning of the end...

The waitress that showed us to the table didn't even share a word with us so we were unaware of the menu choices available. The waiter who took our order was nice and swiftly took our order and drinks...

While we were waiting for drinks we had abit of a chill and appeared the heating had broken so a oil radiator was supplied which was quickly snapped up by the couple next to us who then went on to moan about everything, they even argued with a waitress over the menu.... This should have been a highlight to us to just go elsewhere....

So, from there.... The food....

Starters were ok...

Mains however was a stumbling block.
The lasagne was ok but no real difference from findus horsemeat scandle lasagne and the chicken dish I ordered was salty and dry rosemary'ed to high heaven.. mayonnaise to rescue... :)

Once mains were done with we opted out of dessert and asked for the bill...
The bill came to £53 with a forced service charge. I have no problem leaving a tip but it is rude to assume and I believe that it has to be earned via good food and service and then my tip would reflect this... I no how much tips are appreciated but I believe they have to be earned and off which on this occasion they haven't been. Dull food and presumably mute waitresses are the reasoning.
One last thing on the mute waitress front, we read in the local chronicle that there was a midweek special menu of which we weren't told about so we guessed and guessed dramatically wrong so paid an expensive bill for a uninspired meal...

I hate to leave bad reviews as my experience may have been a one off but gathering from other reviews I'm sure it isn't a one off..the only positives is the indoor fish pond with koi carp, Peroni larger and the waiter was on the ball...

It's a shame really as it promises a lot but delivers little... What I will say is for a proper Italian taste that is actual quality, then try the 'terrazza' in rugeley, all of20 minutes away by car as we have since... You will not be dissapointed I can assure...

“Group on, bad idea!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2013

I recently went to sofias with my partner on a sunday lunch time to use our group on voucher. The fact the restaurant was empty just said it all. The deal stated that we could have two courses up to a certain value off the main menu, when we got there this wasnt the case at all bruchetta, salad or pate were the only options so we ordered the bruchetta. Two dried up pieces of bread with chopped tomatoes a flake of cheese, no balsamic vinegar or olive oil. Whan i asked for balsamic vinegar malt was given, the starter was tasteless and unimpressive. For mains we ordered a ham pizza and a chicken pollo pasta dish. The pizza had chunks of spam on it, and the chicken was hard like it had been cooked for a week with dolmio sauce through it. When i asked for sauces i was told no they dont have any. Coffee's were also included, well half a cup as most of my partners was on his saucer. Two large soft drinks were £6.49 in tiny glasses, a standard must have been the size of an egg cup. Also a 10% service charge is added, which would be ok if the waitresses cracked a smile, served your coffee in a cup and got you some sauce! SHOCKING, DONT GO!
