“Business stay away”
Reviewed February 17, 2013

Not the best of hotels for the money. Service was very average and the reception staff seemed to be more interested in having a chat rather than getting me booked in. The room was very dated and needed a good paint. I had paid extra for an executive room that was much worse than some other hotels standard rooms. I was disappointed as I had stayed in another Mecure hotel the week before which was very good.

Dear shepherd74tom,

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your recent stay at the Mercure London Watford. I have with the team read all your comments and thank you for these. The feedback is valuable so that we are able to improve the overall service within the hotel.

I was sorry to read that the overall checking of the hotel by the reception team was not to our usual standard. Please be assured I will work with the front office manager on this area over the next week. With regards to your room I apologise that the room you stayed in was dated and needed painting. We are in the process of painting a number of our rooms within the hotel, this will also include a selection of privilege rooms.

Once again thank you for your comments.

We travelled from Scotland on train to Watford mid January. Taxi fare £10 to hotel. No heating in room 108 and party time next door! Walls paper thin. We asked to be moved and we ended up in room 411 where there was heating!!! Went to bar for some dinner.Food expensive and very mediocre but there was no other option but to pay and eat there. Too snowy to leave hotel. Next morning I was advised that taxi was best option to get to Warner Brothers Studio and had to pay £15 for the experience.Warner Brothers Studio Tour fantastic!!!! Another £15 back to hotel for some mediocre food at extortionate prices.Next morning another £10 to get to station to get home. If booking do not use this hotel unless you have own transport, like a room with no heating and take your own sandwiches for dinner!!!!!!

Room Tip: Stay at Hilton down the road!!!!!!!!!

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time to comment on your recent stay at the Mercure London Watford. I have with the team read all your comments and thank you for these.
Your comments with regards to the taxi cost are correct due to the hotel been located on the outskirts of Watford. However if you are able to travel by car the hotel is an ideal location for the surrounding areas including Harry Potter tour.
I am sorry that you feel the food within the hotel did not lead to your expectations. I am please to inform you that we have now launched a new menu throughout the hotel, this includes the Bar and Restaurant area.
Thank you for your comment regarding the heating which I have taken on board, I have asked that all arrival rooms are checked in detail, and this includes that heating within the room.
Once again thank you for your comments.

firstly as we were travelling to watford to see the harry potter experience, the hotel was in a fantastic location. it is literally about 10 minutes from the hotel and easy access as its so close to the main roads.

as we were travelling quite a long way, we rung mecure before hand to see if we could have early access to our rooms. we got through to the mecure switchboard who couldnt have beenn more unhelpful! the first person we rung cut us off and the second didnt seem to have any records of our booking. when we did get through to the hotel itself they were extremely helpful and were happy to give us early access. I would suggest to ring the hotel direct and miss the middle man.

we had four rooms and we all got put together which is fab as some hotels dont do this. our room was a double and it was a very decent size. nice bathroom and big bed. very clean and all the usuals- complimentary tea and coffee and shampoo etc.

the spa and pool area looked very nice. we only used the gym which was very very quiet in the morning. perfect. we visited the bar on saturday night. it is a decent size but a little overpriced compared to what we are used to. vodka and lemonade was nearing a fiver! we also found some guests to be very loud especially in the bar area- not somewhere we would take kids. we never visited as it also seemed overpriced- typical hotel. although the menu did look very nice and suitable for all types.

the hotel was disability friendly and had loads of parking which is a decent change for most hotels. we had booked bed and breakfast so visited the buffet in the morning which I was very impressed with. we requested a table of ten and the staff were more than happy to oblige. they asked us if we wanted teas and coffees and made sure we were comfortable. the food was nice and there was plenty of choice for all types.

we visited a lovely little restaurant about 5 minutes away called raj gardens (an indian). fabulous service and great food would really recommend.

the only downside to the hotel is that it is a little bit of a maze as its so big and I found that it lacked signs to help you find your way to the pool etc. also the walls are very very thin. we could all hear a telephone vibrating at 7am from about 3 rooms down! but that again is typical hotels ive been to.

overall a very enjoyable stay. I would definitely recommend if you are coming down for the harry potter tour as its convience is unquestionable.

We stayed at the mecure Watford for 1 night before a visit to Warner bros studios. We had a triple room which had a good layout with a double bed and a single bed located in an alcove. The room was very dated though with a 'strange' bathroom that did not have a separate door just a glass door to the shower and toilet. The room (133) was located under a corridor/staircase on the upper floor so as soon as people started moving around in the morning we were woken up, thankfully this was only 7:30am but would have been annoying if we had wanted a lie in.
Pool is ok not very big but it was quiet.
Breakfast was good, a wide selection, I tried to order smoked haddock and was told they were waiting on a delivery, this was at after 9:00am with breakfast finishing at 10:00am. There was plenty of other options though.
Hotel is next door to a macdonalds but nothing else within walking distance.
Would have given 2 stars based on the room but the overall stay was good value with the pool and breakfast included.

We stayed on one of their party weekends but we did not hear anything from the festivities. Our room was a long way from reception so going out or to breakfast was quite a hike. When we rang for room service, it would appear that our order had been forgotten about, but once it did come, the quality was good. Our break included day transport passes to Central London, but when we enquired about these, we were told that the person holding the passes was stuck in traffic. After several visits to Reception, we were told to buy a day Oyster Card and we would be re-imbursed. After a bit of faffing about, we did this and the cost was deducted from our bill. When I asked for a poached haddock for breakfast (on the menu), I was informed that it would take 35 minutes. I presume this was to put people off - it did me. Did they have to go and buy or catch it??

All in all, a pleasant stay in a comfortable room, reasonably pleasant staff with just one or two blips that may not have happened if there had been no functions on.
