Owner description: The Anvil is one of Hampshire’s largest entertainment venues and offers a wide range of entertainment for all ages including stand-up comedy, theatre, ballet & opera, classical music, pop concerts and pantomime. This year we’ve welcomed top class performers including Lee Evans, Boy George and Billy Ocean and also had the pleasure of hosting one-off events such as the last UK concert appearance of the great pianist Alfred Brendel.

“Great venue, good selection of entertainment”
Reviewed May 31, 2014

The Anvil is our local venue for music and other stage events. There is usually a good programme of acts. On this occasion we saw "The British pink floyd" tribute band. I won't go on about the band, this revue is about the venue in general ( they were excellent though!) I would say, keep a watch on the Anvil, they attract some surprisingly big names, and the building is modern and comfortable. There are two bars, which are good and spacious. It is however a shame they don't serve food any more. If you want a pre performance snack, you will need to visit either a restaurant in Festival place or a local pub. The nearest is the Queens Arms on Bunnian place which is only a five minute walk.

“Great Theatre!”
Reviewed May 30, 2014

The Anvil always offer a wide variety of stage acts, and often bring in some big names in comedy. I've recently been there to see Jason Manford, and a Science & Technology Show with our children. No matter where your seats are located they are comfortable, roomy, and you have a great view off the stage. The only complaint I have are that the elevators to their car park are very slow and extremely small considering the size of a capacity theatre crowd, usually we use the stairs instead of waiting, but I could see how that wouldn't be feasible for the elderly, disabled or those with small children.

“Anvil, Basingstoke”
Reviewed May 28, 2014

A user friendly concert venue. A wide variety of events take place, some just night, some for as long as a week. Good bars. Only downside is the parking. Although the multi-storey has plenty of spaces - just £1 evening price= the barrier system makes exit slow!

“Trio with Enlightenment”
Reviewed May 21, 2014

Having not visited for some months we went three times in a little over a fortnight and enjoyed three top performances. The first and third concerts were given by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. The first being a baroque celebration of Corelli, Bach and Vivaldi in chamber orchestra mode with Sigiswald Kujiken featuring on the rediscovered and revived violoncello da spalla; definitely a new and interesting experience. The second, concert 13 in the season's series featured two great symphonic works; Beethoven's seventh and Schubert's ninth which was doubly enjoyable as the seats were a gift for my wife's birthday. In between came Concert 12 which was a wonderful all Mozart programme including the sublime Piano concerto 21 and Symphony 4,his last great masterpiece. This was performed by the Zurich chamber Orchestra under the acclaimed conductor Sir Roger Norrington in what I believe is his eightieth birthday year. This was a splendid night although the concert hall was warm and stuffy, a fact noted by the maestro himself.
Note to the Anvil: a great concert hall acoustically but the air conditioning does need sorting. We are most fortunate to have the benefit of international class concerts in our town and even more so that we live only about fifteen minutes walk away .
