Owner description: The Anvil is one of Hampshire’s largest entertainment venues and offers a wide range of entertainment for all ages including stand-up comedy, theatre, ballet & opera, classical music, pop concerts and pantomime. This year we’ve welcomed top class performers including Lee Evans, Boy George and Billy Ocean and also had the pleasure of hosting one-off events such as the last UK concert appearance of the great pianist Alfred Brendel.

It is many years since we last visited The Anvil, but we had managed to get tickets for "Glorious Handel by Candlelight". What a wonderful evening it was - a twenty-two piece orchestra of strings, harpsichord, and horns supported by a solo soprano. It was an enchanting evening and the fabulous acoustics of the Anvil made it very intimate.

Excellent venue, good accoustics, friendly staff. Booking via the web-site can be really slow, however. The Forge is a small, seperate theatre within the Anvil and is hold around 100 people. It is superb for intimate music concerts, and hosts a wide range of well-known and not-so-well-known artists.

Sound within the venue is excellent enabling a clear sound to be appreciated whever you sit. Favorite seats are at the back looking down onto the stage

I've been to many gigs at The Anvil and the smaller venue within it, The Forge. The sound is great as is the atmosphere. I've sat front, middle and back and am impressed that even at the back, I had a good view and it didn't seem like I was very far back. The Forge seats about 100 so this means it is very intimate - perfect for the smaller music acts that play there. The facilities are excellent - clean, cared for and easily accessible.

That's the next thing to comment on... the variety of entertainment they have is fantastic. My favourite genre of music is folk and I really appreciate the fact that there is a full programme of folk on. I also appreciate the fact I have been able to take my daughter to see comedy, ballet, musicals and many other genres of music from pop and classical to rock n roll - all top notch - to broaden her horizons, right on our doorstep!

Lastly, the staff are fantastic! Friendly, helpful and a huge asset to what is a huge asset to Basingstoke!
