Table for 2 in the first meal out back up north. Great service and food. We were looking for something a bit more sophisticated than standard pub food and Olives certainly delivered. Lovely atmosphere and attentive staff in a nice location (it was raining of course). Welcome back to northern hospitality.

We like to go to Olives for a special evening out. It is good to be able to sit in the bar area in front of the fire in winter whilst we choose what to eat. Not been for a couple of months but just wanted to post a positive review as was surprised to see a couple of negative ones and thought Olives deserved better. Looking forward to our next visit.

Last night was our first visit to Olives and it was a mixture of both good and bad points! We ordered a bottle of wine - which was lovely but were given mismatched glasses - not the end of the world but not really expected either. Sorted quickly without much fuss. I had soup to start which was ok, a little bland but certainly edible. It was served with a lovely chunk of bread but with no side plate and no butter knife it was a litle tricky to deal with - tried my steak knife but was impossible so ate it without butter! Again, not a major issue but was a bit niggly. We both had the sirloin steak with Yorkshire pudding, mash, roasties and veg. The steak was gorgeous! Spuds and veg were nice but the Yorkshire pudding was like nothing I'd ever seen - but didn't detract from the lovely main course - by the way the Sunday menu is exceptionaly good value too. We were disappointed that they had run out of custard - how can a restaurant do that? Surely a chef can make custard from scratch? Anyway, I had the ice cream - and was I glad! It was a revelation - made by the chef - I think - it's made there anyway and it is to die for! All in all, like I said - a bit of a mixed evening - rounded off by the owners clearing away quite noisily as we were the last in (it wasn't late by the way) so that didn't make us feel too comfortable! We will go back for another meal as on the whole it was good food.

Don't be in too much of a hurry when visiting, because everything is expertly prepared fresh when ordered. Relax and sit back and enjoy the wonderful food prepared by Roy and ably assisted by his wife Paula, who makes fabulous deserts and her own unbelievably scrumptious ice cream.

We stubbled across the olives when looking for some Pub lunch but decided to give it a go. It looked quite expensive however it wasn't. We had starters and a main course the lamb Henry, oven roasted steak and my daughter had spaghetti bol (for a 4 year old to say its the best spag bol she's had, that's saying something!!) the portions were very generous and couldn't finish it all!! The only downside was we were going to order deserts but it took 10 minutes for the waitress to come and take Our order by which time I felt too full do we left it. The bill including 2 rounds of drinks was £36 which compared to the pub up the road this was very reasonable and the food was much better. We will be returning :)
