We have spent several happy afternoons at the Bolton Museum. We are home schoolers and this is a lovely place to take the kids to where they can amble around and have a look at all sorts of artefacts without anyone being too stuffy and best of all it is free!
There is a very small collection of fish that if you get there at the right time you can watch being fed. Its not the blue planet but I have a 7 year old and a 2 year old and they still find them interesting and need to be dragged away whenever we visit. Recently 3 rays have been added to the collection. Who doesn't love a ray?
There is a gallery there of permanent art work which also has a room attached to it for exhibitions. The last time we went there had just been an art competition and there were some lovely works up. As a parent I am really appreciative of the Noah's ark in the gallery that entertains the children whilst you peruse.
It isn't a massive museum but there is lots there to do for children and its very hands on. There are several short quizzes for the children to complete by the entrance with all the resources you need to fill them out (pencils and clipboards etc). There are lots of things for the children to do on the upper level where all the stuffed animals are.
The gift shop is also a parents haven as all too often these are stocked with things that are too pricey but this one is full of pocket money items so you can get a memento of your trip out.
It also regularly puts things on for the children to do. In the past we have made key rings and all sorts. The staff are lovely and incredibly helpful. I would recommend a trip there

The kids loved the museum and the aquarium in the basement. Worth a visit and friendly staff.
Its also a great place to visit if you like history and would like to go on your own or with your partner.
