As local 'general' museums go - this be alright.
Upon entering you can visit the library or Tourist Information Centre on the ground floor. The latter alas had nothing to offer in the way of guidebooks to Bolton or places of interest therein.
Down stairs there be an aquarium. This alright for small 'fry' but not up to much compared to the more modern and specialist such elsewhere.
Upstairs be the Museum and Art Gallery. The museum about Bolton be fine - just what you should expect a local museum to be - about that very place and its history. The art gallery also has some local/ish pieces plus an exhibition room for touring shows. Alas, as mentioned earlier - there be no guidebooks to this place - not once on any of our several visits.
