A group of 5 of us went for dinner on a Saturday night - luckily I had booked a table as the pub soon filled up with dinner parties and also girls (and guys) out on the town. There is a very nice atmosphere in the pub which is helped by the friendly staff and wide variety of comforting pub grub. I opted for the fish and chips and was not disappointed by the generous portion of both fish and chips! The chips were very crunchy with a fluffy middle (as proper chips should be!) and the fish was very meaty and not overloaded with greasy batter. My fellow diners had the Ultimo burger, lamb rump and beef stroganoff - all of which was very tasty and polished off. We also ordered a side of cheesy garlic pitta which was extremely tasty with lots of cheese and garlic flavour.
For dessert, we had the mochamisu (very disappointed by the lack of coffee flavour and tasted more of cream and cake), the sticky toffee pudding (excellent sponge and ice cream however this was swimming in a sauce that was far too sweet and lacked toffee flavour) and also the tower of profiteroles (good profiteroles however the gingerbread and chocolate base was far too sweet). So those without a super-sweet tooth (or diabetics!) should be wary or the desserts board!
We tried two of the guest ales and also a glass of red wine - all of which were very drinkable and decent price.
Overall the mains were very enjoyable and of generous portion, with room for improvements for the desserts. I would be more than happy to return any time as the service and atmosphere made it an enjoyable experience.
