The Hilton is a rather large hotel slap bang on Gatwick South Terminal with the long stay car park literally just across the road - anyway this is about the restaurant not the hotel..

We had a bottle of wine in the bar to warm up the evening and could overhear a small crowd behind us saying they would be heading into Crawley to go to the Bella Italia - well I don't mind going to Bella's either but the thought of leaving a hotel to go into Crawley wouldn't be on my 'to do' list! The hotel restaurant (Amys) was too expensive for the group in question and certainly its not a cheap joint but the sevice from a Nepalese waitress was very good indeed with a perfect 'English' sense of humour.

To start I had the beef carpaccio (very small) followed by the grilled seafood platter (very big) which was superb accompanied by a Chablis from Louis Jadot, always a reliable bottle. Cheese to follow was probably too much but hey I was on holiday.

The bill including that bottle of chablis and a pinot grigio in the bar came in at a hefty £160ish however the food itself would have been maybe £80 including the most expensive main. To be honest I was impressed by the food in such a 'one night' traveller hotel at an airport and granted not everyone will want to pay so much however I believe there was a cheaper option upstairs

You come to expect little from Airport hotel restaurants but the food surprised us. The liver was tender and succulent and the lamb tender and tasty. However, it is ridiculously overpriced but that was not such a shock as this is a feature of Airport hotels.

Take the walk to the South Terminal and buy food from Marks and Spencer or Subway rather than waste your money here. All the main dishes were far too expensive, so I opted for what the starter menu calls an "asparagus salad". I expected that this would consist of more than just 5 tiny spears of asparagus stacked in the middle of an otherwise empty plate, but this is just what I received. Unless you consider the very thinly sliced and sparse garnish of colored peppers or the rolled-up strips of uncooked bacon to be substance! Honestly highway robbery for the prices charged versus value-for-money! Go somewhere else, unless you are A) not hungry and B) do not mind throwing money away.

Amy's is just right for that cup of tea or coffee and a snack when you arrive and have a few hours before your next meal
