“Great food and excellent service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 26, 2013

Every time we've been here with our friends and family, the food is always great, many options to choose from and service always excellent and very friendly.
They will go extra mile to cater for our toddler as well, thanks to Helen and the chef.

Recently moved to the UK from the US. After many hours of traveling with family, copious amounts of baggage, dog, kennel and personal vehicle the most important thing was a roof and bed. We chose The Carpenters Arms on the strength of previous reviews and accommodation of pets. We got more than we expected. The owners Dave and Helen were, in my decades of traveling experience, two of the most welcoming and patient B&B owners I've met. We arrived on off hours, tired, hungry and logistically burdened. We were welcomed, provided a very comfortable room, asked, and told 'no problem, no trouble' each time we asked for some latitude to get situated. Dave and Helen put their all into the food and personalized care for each guest and made us feel like the journey across the pond was worth it! They are the reason why we turned a 4-day stay into a 1-day stay and the reason why my wife and I (and our boxer!) stop by for a meal and a pint. If you are stopping by for a brief stay or requiring slightly longer terms accommodations I would highly recommend The Carpenters Arms.

A room with space, dogfriendly, a good bed and even for vegetarians a good meal. And all for very reasonable prices. The service is very friendly. If we are coming back in the area of Swindon we'll definitively will choose for The Carpenters Arms again

We stayed here on the 19th and 20th july.
The pub does not get going until after 1730, but your room, in a pleasant courtyard setting is available when you arrive. Being a courtyard room, you have the convenience of entering your room directly from the garden. The room itself is large, with a large comfortable bed and spotlessly clean.
David and helen chilton are hard working, but really down to earth and friendly. They always make time to chat to guests, and are really sincere in offering any advise etc.
This flows down to the staff, in the bar and the restaurant. All of the staff were pleasant and chatty, and naturally so, no false impressions here.

The bar has a good selection of beers wines and spirits, and the atmosphere is quiet but welcoming. They make it feel homely, as though its your local.
As for the restaurant, the menu is good, and there are always specials on the blackboards, and special, they are. The food was always freshly cooked, piping hot and of generous proportions.
Again, the restaurant had a great atmosphere, and the staff were most pleasant. The prices were reasonable too.

The full english breakfast was so generous, even I struggled to eat it all, thats saying something........
Summing up, we will be returning to the carpenters arms, and we wish david and helen all the best.

Room Tip: All rooms surround the courtyard (beer garden). All pleasant.

Well let me say the reason for our stay which was for five nights. I was photographing the RIAT airshow.

Firstly we booked months in advance and kept the proprietors (Helen and David) up to date on requirements. Every email (and there was about 3) was replied promptly and courteously giving good information.

The location was excellent and yes there is not much else in walking distance, but from what I could see it would not take much to walk along the quiet country lane to South Marston, but we never tried this due to being at Fairford each day. (Tip For foreign travellers walking along quiet country lanes is common in England but please where there is no footpath you should walk on the right-hand side towards the traffic).

Parking is excellent and so is the WiFi :-)

The Carpenters Arms is also situated near a pretty quiet railway line, but the trains end at night and in fact I find the sound quite comforting and I did not hear any complaints concerning this.

Helen and David are excellent hosts. The obviously have been in the business a long time and have got the balance of inter-customer relationships just right. They are both friendly and professional without being too intrusive or too familiar. They are both very helpful and will go out of their way to ensure you have a good stay.

The accommodation is excellent. We had a double room with a huge bed. We never turned the TV on so cant comment. The bathroom is clean and the shower worked perfectly. Everything you find in a higher rated hotel was in the room i.e. kettle, hairdryer, iron and ironing board. Helen and David are new proprietors (October 2012 I think) and I am sure they will continue making certain improvements and putting their own mark on it. The rooms had everything we wanted and needed. Also the WIFI worked a treat and was FREE (very important these days).

We ate outside on the patio every night. The choice of food and quality was excellent. Lets get this in perspective it is not Michelin star but it is also NOT Michelin star prices either. It is good honest food with a home cooked feeling. I feel the choice may be a little too large as there is a "specials" board as well as a menu. On the Sunday Helen and David even kept a Sunday roast back for to return from the airshow. It was gratefully appreciated and very delicious.

We only stayed for breakfast twice as we had such early stats on other mornings. My goodness the full English is huge and beautifully cooked. I am a large ex-rugby player and I struggled to get through it. I would say it is the best English breakfast I have ever had in a hotel and I stay in hotels probably 100 nights of the year in my work.

Conclusion.

Excellent accommodation, thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and will rebook for six nights for next year

The only thing I would improve (not a complaint) in the short term would be the seating area out on main courtyard. The benches are really tired, a little too low and slightly uncomfortable. Lets be fair as stated before the proprietors are reasonably new and I am sure this is in their plans to address.

Thank you to Helen and David and all the staff for a wonderful, relaxing stay. See you next year.

Room Tip: Rooms can be hot if the weather in the UK is hot, but you can ask for a fan. There is a huge Sai...

Excellent hosts. Nice beer and good food. Only down side was that it wasn't open Friday afternoon when we arrived (3:30pm give or take). Having said that once we settled in and got a drink it was very nice. Rooms are surprising large but the bathroom floor needed a little maintenance but it didn't spoil our stay. Would recommend this to anyone looking for a pub/restaurant for a short break. Thank you to David and Helen, plus your staff, for looking after us.
