“The Best Hotel.”
Reviewed June 19, 2013

My partner and I are average, everyday sort of people but we like to try to find a touch of luxury every so often. This hotel is not cheap but the experience is worth every penny.
We stayed here for 1 night on the way back home not knowing waht to expect. On arrival the receptionist escorted us to our room and left us to settle in. The room was lovely, clean, spacious and a balcony that led down some steps to the rear garden.
The bar in the Lounge was well stocked and the drinks were made well by a very friendly young lady. We decided to eat in the restaurant and each had a wonderful meal with good wine. The fillet steak was the best I have had in the UK, compliments to the Chef.
We have stayed in many hotels throughout europe and the UK and nothing so far has reached the quality of The Pear Tree at Purton. Perfect for a romantic stop-over.
I can't find the words to express how luxurious everything was and how relaxed we felt on departure, suffice to say, we will be returning to this fantastic hotel with superb food and lovely staff.
Well done Pear Tree.

Had visited this hotel a couple of years ago with four other friends. This time decided to visit for a two day break on our own to celebrate my husband's birthday. Having booked, had then seen some of the negative comments on Trip Advisor so were a little concerned. We needn't have been - nothing was too much trouble. Superb service but in a very quiet, efficient way. Birthday cake I had ordered was exactly as requested, food was excellent, room beautifully equipped with all those little extras and extremely clean - there is a lovely relaxed atmosphere in the hotel where you can just sit and chill. We discovered lots of thoughtful extras, such as providing folders of suggested walks direct from the hotel or further afield.
They were incredibly busy over the weekend, juggling with 40th wedding anniversary teas followed by 60th birthday dinners and a separate event in the upstairs function room and a full dining-room but there was still an air of professional efficiency and calm with absolutely no suggestion of being made to wait or that as a couple we were less important.
We cannot wait for another visit.
Thank you to every one.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the garden have the best views and are the quietest

Having spent days trying to find a two night break for two couples The Pear Tree was our only option with availability. Let me tell you - we were not disappointed, what a fabulous find!! Where do I begin - Room - spotless and spacious. Food - delicious. Service - excellent. Breakfast - you just HAVE to try the home-made muesli. Thanks to all the staff who were friendly and helpful.

Thank you so much to all who made our break so special.

A birthday dinner with family was expected to be something slightly special for the £35 a head, both in terms of the food and the service. The staff were welcoming and friendly, and so was the service at table. However two things were disappointing:

(1) The clam chowder that I ordered as a starter contained bacon which I don't eat - chowders are seafood soups and should not contain any meat. To avoid making a fuss on this special occasion I simply swapped with my partner who happened to have ordered a non-meat starter, but this was not a good start.
(2) The only wine list we were given showed a selection of wines, all of which were available only by the glass. My parents-in-law each ordered a glass of wine for themselves and this was poured at the table from the bottle. My understanding is that there is a legal requirement to use marked glasses (either 125ml or 175ml) when wine is served by the glass in this way - there were no markings on these glasses. In fact my father-in-law had to ask for his glass to be topped up as it contained so little compared with the other one!

Overnight and the following morning my partner wasn't feeling totally well (despite having no allergies to seafood). We were therefore left wondering whether, with the other problems mentioned above, The Pear Tree is quite as "kosher" as it should be.

Many thanks for taking the time to give us your thoughts and comments, we always appreciate any feedback.
I am glad that you found the service and welcome good and hope that the two points you mentioned did not affect your visit too much.
Our clam chowder is made to a traditional recipe which includes bacon, we would always encourage guests to mention to the person taking the order if there is a specific food that they do not eat.
With reference to our wine list, all our wines are available by the bottle and the prices on our list (between £17.50-£45) should reflect this. On the back page of our list we have our recommended selections which pair with food. These are available by the glass or by the bottle. We find that our customers prefer being shown the bottle that they are getting their glass poured from, to have a look at the label and so on. Regular training is given to restaurant staff with regards to wine measures, but I will ensure that your comments are passed on.
I do hope that you partner is feeling better, we have regular inspections to ensure our food safety standards are up to scratch and always pay close attention to food hygiene rules. This has been the case for the 25 years that we have been in business and will continue to be so.
Regards
Alix Young

We have visited The PearTree at Purton on many occasions, for lunch, dinner and overnight stays. It has always been a favourite, but because of my Mothers relocation we have not been there for a while. After all this time it is has not changed. Same owners, same chef , great service, great rooms, great food etc. etc. if you are going to be in the area I thoroughly recommend you to visit or stay. I would be more than surprised if you were disappointed. It's still a gem of a find.

Having wandered around looking for a place to eat, we arrived feeling very under dressed for this beautiful venue. Despite feeling rather shabby, we were given a warm welcome and treated to a fabulous evening. The three course set menu was excellent value, the food was beautifully presented and full of wonder flavours. We felt really valued guests and enjoyed a very special evening.

We cant wait to return and hopefully stay the night next time so that we can also enjoy the hotel building and grounds not to mention breakfast! Thank you

I have lost count of how many times we have returned to this amazing restaurant / hotel and every visit has been magical. Every friend we have taken has been blown away by the friendliness, the quality of food and service, and the ambience. For us, it is a place to come to feel totally revived and spoilt - 'life has got to be good while we can still come here'.
Ann and Francis Young have developed the perfect balance - you are made to feel so welcome but never intruded upon. Anne's garden is so beautiful throughout the year. You should also try their wine- you can see the vines from the garden- fabulous! If you prefer to select your own wine there is a great wine list, with plain English descriptors, that actually match the wine.
If you deserve / need a special treat this is certainly the place- again and again for us.
