I take my dog regulary to Stanton Park and always have a lovely peaceful walk round the forest. Lots of different walks you can go on and even if the car park is full, you may still only see the odd person as everyone takes different routes. Lovely views of the forest, house and wildlife. Although very popular to dog walkers they are responsible owners who pick up their dogs mess and keep them under control if needs be. Appealing to people of all ages, adults who fancy a peaceful wall, joggers, kids who want to feed the ducks and see the baby lambs. Perfect also for a nice picnic on a sunny day...

This is a nice, quiet and in places a very secluded set of interconnected walks which may be started form any one of several car parks on the A361 at Kingsdown or Stanton Fitzwarren. The park covers over 70 hectares so once you get beyond the parts around the car park frequented by dog walkers it very possible to be walking on your own for hours!

At the time of writing some of the tracks aren't too obvious, though many are being transformed from tracks around fields to proper paths, so take a map (or smartphone) and be prepared to go "off piste" a bit to find the paths. For example; to get from the circuit near the south car park at Kingsdown to the lake by Stanton House you have to head towards the electricity sub-station and left past the mobile home park then north along the side of the crematorium (all very celubrious.)

The vistas around the walks are pleasant but if I'm honest aren't all that spectacular (this is Swindon, not the Serengeti) but if you walk to the lake (an old fish pond, I think) there are some very nice views across it to the Cotswald stone manor house (Stanton House) beyond.

The surrounding woods are home to many deer so if you're quet and keep your eye's peeled you'll easily come across them in the evenings or mornings, though they wont let you get too close, so if you want to photograph them take a zoom lens!

There are a few things of local interest in the park; one of the tracks is actually a disused railway line and about 400m West of the lake there is a "Scheduled Ancient Monument" - the site of a Roman Villa excavated in the '60s, although there are no visible remains today (this is Swindon, not Pompeii.)

The local authority also runs a *lot* of events at the park; sometimes several per month so if you're interested do some researching on the web!

I'm also informed that some of the meadows to the North-West of the park are planted up with different seasonal wild flowers giving colourful displays at various times of year, though I'm yet to experience these.
