“Has gone down hill”
Reviewed October 26, 2013

After several visits, we were looking forward to our most recent. Wish we hadn't bothered. The staff were nice enough but the food was a let down. Steaks were both more well done than the rare we had requested. The 'chef' had forgotten the onion rings and coleslaw that came as part of our meal, we pointed this out to the waitress who wouldn't take our word for it and had to check the menu. Came out with them but the onion rings were cold and undercooked, like they had just chucked any that were knocking around in a bowl.

“Not for the calorie conscious!”
Reviewed October 13, 2013

This restaurant is always busy, so they must be doing something right!

There is big menu to choose from and all of the menu choices are accompanied by their calorific values. This can be a bit off putting as some of the main menu options are more than half the recommended daily intake!

Anyway, the service was a bit slow - I think we got a very new waitress, but the staff were friendly. The food was delivered swiftly. It was all good and there seemed to be a lot of happy returning customers.

“Tasty, Good Value, Very busy, Noisey”
Reviewed October 12, 2013

Great food, The waiting staff are all fantastic, always smiling and nothing is too much trouble, But if you go on a saturday evening, Then prepare to wait!!! a long time.......... for a table........................ Can't fault the food, Only thing I would slightly change is the Salad Bar, Looked a bit grim and a bit tastless, But the main food was a great hit (Ribs are great).

“Bad service, humiliated”
Reviewed October 6, 2013

First time I went, the food was good, service was good, but the atmosphere is very sterile, it has the feel of an office canteen/production line. On my second visit tonight, we were seated, then within 3 minutes very rudely asked to move as we were "in somebody elses seats!" No apology was offered, instead it was as if the waitress thought we had just wandered in and sat there! Very embarassing! We were then asked to wait around, and offered another table, which was crammed into a small space with barely a foot between our elbows and the next table. I asked if we could be moved to one of the many empty tables not so crowded in, and was given a look of pure thunder from the same waitress, however she did move us.. to a table right next to the salad bar... ok we sat there... no menus were brought to us and no drinks order taken, we sat here in limbo for fifteen minutes before giving up and leaving. Will not return.

“Poor service”
Reviewed September 30, 2013

We fancied a cooked breakfast on a Saturday lunchtime and thought we'd be too late to get a table in the Tawny Owl a mile down the road so decided to try this place instead. We'd intended having the all-day breakfast but changed our minds when we saw it had over 1500 calories. We had the classic burgers instead (half the calories of the breakfast). The burgers were okay but difficult to eat in the bun as the bread kept falling apart so we had to resort to knives and forks instead. The salad bar was unappetising, the lettuce was limp, the tomatoes bruised and past their best and everything else looked very gloopy. My husband chose the bottomless coffee cup but found it really difficult to attract the right flavour of wait person to fill it up. We asked the waitress who brought the food but she said she didn't do drinks and would send someone. Ten minutes later no one had turned up so I called to a member of staff carrying a tray of drinks. She said we should ask a waitress. Not sure what she was if it wasn't a waitress. They were all dressed the same so no obvious difference between food and beverage wait staff. I eventually caught the eye of the young waitress who'd brought my smoothie and she kindly filled my husband's coffee cup. He wasn't offered another refill though. This experience couldn't have been a greater contrast than the bottomless coffee cup in America where you practically have to beat the wait staff off with a stick to stop them refilling your cup every time you set it back down on the table.

Like other reviewers we had waited too long to be shown to a table despite the place not being full. We then waited even longer for anyone to take our order. In fact, we were about to walk out and try our luck at the Tawny Owl just as the waitress arrived with her notepad. We should have followed our instincts. We won't be eating there again.

The place was very noisy when we were there as there were lots of families with young children. We had expected this and wouldn't have minded had the service been up to scratch.

I would advise anyone, unaccompanied by children, wishing to have lunch or breakfast to try the Tawny Owl instead. Just head South on Thamesdown Drive past the Orbital Centre and you'll find it on your left. You'll get much better service and their chips are really good too.
