Description: Bistro Les Chats is a traditional French bistro where all our dishes are made on the premises with fresh ingredients. We use organic produce where practical and when it tastes the best. Our meat comes mainly from Wiltshire farms, with some specialist items coming from Rungis market in Paris; our chicken is always free range, our eggs are free range organic from Purton House Organics. Fish comes fresh daily, mainly from Cornwall, some from Scotland. Our menu changes monthly to reflect seasonal availability of fresh produce. We also offer a carefully chosen wine selection and range of French beers and ciders. Fixed price lunch and early evening menus are available, as well as a la carte. Reservations are recommended, particularly at weekends, but not always necessary. All our desserts and pastries are made on the premises and celebration cakes and gateaux can be made to order.

After looking at previous reviews, we thought that we would give Les Chats a try. I went with my husband and 18 year old son for my birthday.

You must book, as it does fill up and we did actually see people being turned away.

The only downside that i can see to this restaurant is that it is not overly spacious and if you are not careful you would be able to hear another person's conversation, although there is nice music in the background, which is not intrusive.

Both waitresses that we had were very helpful and what was nice was that they really do not rush you.

If you like mussels then you really have to go here. My son and I both had them for a starter and were sad to see the bowls empty at the end. The shallot and white wine sauce that they come with was great, not too salty at all. We both then had the confit of Duck with was so tender it just fell off the bone with no effort. My husband had tartiflette to begin with and then cassoulet for main, and his response to the food was much the same as ours. The portions may not look big, but when you add a little bit of veg or potato (or both!) then you will find you have enough.

We had half a carafe of red and half a carafe of white, which was fine and my son had a bottle of beer, proper beer, not lager. You can also opt for actual bottles of wine if you prefer.

We didn’t think we had room for puddings, but were so glad that we decided to have one. Both my son and I had a lemon mousse, which comes with a couple of biscuits, and it was very refreshing. They even put a candle on one with no prompting -little things like that :).

It is not overly priced which makes a change for somewhere of this quality.

We have booked again - actually did it that night in the restaurant - to go for my husband’s birthday and are thoroughly looking forward to it.

If you want something a little bit different and not just the usual chicken then please give this place a try. You really will not be disappointed.

A wonderful restaurant with food to die for. We shared the l'escargot and warm pigeon salad followed by duck on a bed of flagelot beans...it was all delicious! The feel of the restaurant is something quite unexpected in Swindon. I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who loves french food.

We had the lunchtime day special (french onion soup + whole plaice in a caper sauce + cheese plate) and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Excellent value at about £10 each! Very friendly staff and nice atmosphere. Makes a nice change for eating out in Swindon.

Les Chats lives up to the excellent standards of it's well patronised sister Tapas Bar next door. Moules Marinières delicious, Confit de Canard and Entrecôte a la Béarnaise to follow equally enjoyable.
