What is it with Derby?
As a visitor to the City on a Sunday night, I was shocked to discover the whole City virtually closed.
Countless restaurants closed down or just closed for the day. Shops and pubs boarded up. It resembles something out of the walking dead!
Eating out was ether a chain restaurant (Zizzi, Pizza Express, Nandos etc) or nothing. Let's be honest, I detest chain pubs and restaurants with a passion so having this choice was very disappointing.
So we plumped for Zizzi. Considering everywhere else was shut, it wasn't particularly busy. There appeared to be only 2 servers working, one of which was probably the manager. We found the service to be pretty good. The food was nice, particularly the starters ( a limited choice of various garlic breads or virtually nothing else).
The fact I have a taste card made the experience far more enjoyable (It's easier to stomach a chain restaurant when one of the meals is free!).
Overlooking the dirty kitchen from the toilets, with an overflowing bin, dirty work surfaces and food and rubbish on the floor was NOT a pleasant site. I strongly suggest that if Zizzi wish to be this open about their kitchen practices they take a seriously good look at their operation!
Overall a decent experience at Zizzi but nothing to alter my opinion of them and they will remain a last resort!
