Description: At Zizzi we like to do things a little differently. We don’t do over-complicated recipes or scrimpy portion sizes. We’re all about the well-chosen ingredients, simply put together to make exceptional Italian food.Zizzi Derby is situated along Friargate and is great for both parties and smaller groups. It’s design has been inspired by the Rolls Royce factory and the building’s origins as a grocery shop. Its quirky layout helps to add to the great atmosphere on an evening. In summer we fling open all the windows and doors (as long as the sun is shining), which gives the rear conservatory a real feel of the Mediterranean.

What is it with Derby?
As a visitor to the City on a Sunday night, I was shocked to discover the whole City virtually closed.
Countless restaurants closed down or just closed for the day. Shops and pubs boarded up. It resembles something out of the walking dead!
Eating out was ether a chain restaurant (Zizzi, Pizza Express, Nandos etc) or nothing. Let's be honest, I detest chain pubs and restaurants with a passion so having this choice was very disappointing.
So we plumped for Zizzi. Considering everywhere else was shut, it wasn't particularly busy. There appeared to be only 2 servers working, one of which was probably the manager. We found the service to be pretty good. The food was nice, particularly the starters ( a limited choice of various garlic breads or virtually nothing else).
The fact I have a taste card made the experience far more enjoyable (It's easier to stomach a chain restaurant when one of the meals is free!).
Overlooking the dirty kitchen from the toilets, with an overflowing bin, dirty work surfaces and food and rubbish on the floor was NOT a pleasant site. I strongly suggest that if Zizzi wish to be this open about their kitchen practices they take a seriously good look at their operation!
Overall a decent experience at Zizzi but nothing to alter my opinion of them and they will remain a last resort!

“Great food and service!”
Reviewed June 28, 2014

The food was amazing! Starting strong on starters, main and desserts did not disappointed us, they even raised a bar higher!
However, the most exceptional highlight of our lovely evening in Zizzi was service! Our waiter- Emma was exceptional, nice and really really good. She advised me wine and it was perfect, just the one I wanted. She was patient when I could't decide which dessert to take. She is doing excellent work!
It was our anniversary and Zizzi was perfect to celebrate it!

I highly recommend Zizzi for everyone.

“Service? What service? Some hygeine concerns too”
Reviewed June 24, 2014

Going out for a celebration meal is a big deal for us. I was appalled by the shoddy service. Lots of staff milling around but really not showing anything in the way of motivation or giving a damn about the customers. We had 4 young children with us so a long wait was frustrating, especially when it really wasn't that busy. On 2 occasions, we had to ask twice for our drinks-both times they forgot to bring them, blaming the bar staff, who were just larking about behind the bar.
Such a great looking place & the food wasn't bad (if rather expensive for what it was), but if the layout gives a good view of the kitchen area, then surely they could make an effort to keep it clean. There was a big pile of rubbish, half way to being brushed up in the entrance to the kitchen. I'm no food inspector but I'm certain if one had made a spot check they'd have had some choice words to say...
Overall really made us wish we'd gone somewhere that deserved our service. Looking at some other reviews makes me realise our experience wasn't a one-off. So maybe the management should take a closer look at Derby's Zizzi & sort some damage limitation before its reputation spreads....

“Mediocre visit”
Reviewed June 22, 2014 via mobile

The food was fairly good but not the quality you would expect for the price we paid.

The service was ok, staff were friendly when they acknowledged your existence.

Wouldn't go again unless someone else was picking up the tab and wouldn't really recommend it.

Went there for a glass on the way to the curry house but enjoyed the choice of reds they has available. Merlot on offer was a result.
