“For maze enthusiasts”
Reviewed January 24, 2011

The front of the hotel and bar/restaurant area is modern and welcoming. Beyond this is literally a maze of narrow dead end corridors with bedrooms on three floors joined by steep stairs. We couldnt find the room on the third floor initially but had lots of fun navigating the maze. The decor of the corridors was plain and the carpets were discoloured.

The ensuite room on the 3rd floor was satisfactory but relatively small with plain decor and old fitments. It did have a fantastic view across Derby. The room and toilet/bathroom was clean and warm with just enough hot water. The beds were very comfortable. There was noise until 12.30 am from music in the function room below the hotel and reduced noise much later.

The reception staff were friendly and helpful, less so the breakfast staff. Having been seated for breakfast the waiter did not explain it was self service or anything else, The selection was average, the sausages undercooked and the eggs were drying up. I had to ask for tea and toast, got coffee.

Having said that the hotel had a quite good feel to it, not impersonal and sterile like many of its competitors and it was clean. The location is on a relatively quiet street in a residential area, which suited, rather than in the commercial centre. All in all it is an acceptable place to stay for a couple of nights at discount rates.

Stayed for 2 nights to visit family in the area. Didn't go into the city centre so can't advise on how close hotel is situated. We had a room at the back of the hotel which had a very pleasant view and was very quiet. Room/bathroom slightly dated but clean. Reception staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was also very good. Certainly couldn't be faulted for the price. Would definitely stay there again and would recommend it.

Arriving at the International can fill one with a sense of apprehension because the first two things you notice are that it is about two decades behind the present and that you might never find your room in the seemingly random maze of corridors. Once you do, however, the rest of the stay is fine. Our room and the few we had glances of while they were being cleaned were spacious and clean. I think they're in the middle of updating the rooms; ours was a bit of a blast from the past, but they've put effort into the bathroom where pretty much everything was shiny and new. Bed was comfortable.

Breakfast wasn't much to write home about. Food was all right but we had to find someone to ask for tea/coffee/toast.

Overall, not a bad experience, especially for the money.

I stayed in this hotel for 2 nights, a Friday and Saturday. The hotel was clean and the room was fine - although a little hot. The breakfast was good and the 3 course set menu on the Friday was very good. The hotel has a good location and is easy to find. Having booked this on an internet offer it was very good value for money, with breakfast included in the price. The only drawbacks were that on the Friday night a singles night was held with music playing until about 1 a.m., and the car park was busy on the Saturday as a wedding reception was being held at the hotel.

Thank you for your feedback regarding your stay. I am glad that you enjoyed your breakfast and you also took advantage of our 3 Courses for £10 special offer on Fridays in the Thyme Restaurant.

I have contacted the organisers of the Singles Night and I have been informed that going forward the music will be lowered after 12am. Occasionally our car park (80 spaces) does reach capacity when weddings and other functions are taking place at the hotel. I apologies, for any inconvenience that this may have caused.

I would like to thank you for taking the time to leave your comments and I hope that when visiting Derby again you choose the International Hotel.

Kind Regards

Am used to staying at 4 and 5 star hotels but needed a bed just for a brief overnight stay which was close to the venue I needed to go to. Did what it says on the tin...and had a very pleasant breakfast the following morning. Room was suprisingly big and the only drawnack was the small tv. But as I was only there a short time it was'nt a big issue. Overall a pleasant expereience and good value.

Thank you for your feedback regarding your stay. I am glad that you enjoyed your breakfast and also found the room larger than conventional hotel rooms.

We pride ourselves on providing value for money and I am glad that you felt that this was the case on your stay.

I have taken note of your comments in regards to the small TV and I can assure you this is not the case in the majority of rooms. However, we are in the process of commissioning new TV’s in all of our hotel rooms.

I would like to thank you for taking the time to leave your comments and I hope that when visiting Derby again you choose the International Hotel.

we asked to change rooms as the window was smashed and my friend and i felt it would be unsafe to sleep in such a room. The bedding was stale smelling and did not look clean very dated and not at all like the pictures on the webpage!!!
the whole of the breakfast was clearly chucked in a chip pan even the mushrooms sausage was of a very poor quality and the french waiter was never about when u wanted him!!!
would not put a dog in here!!!

Thank you for your feedback regarding your stay.

We have rectified the window which had a slight crack and I am surprised that you felt unsafe in your room. The hotel is staffed 24 hours and all room doors have a peep hole and an additional lock internally.

In regards to the bedding, I have raised the issue with our linen company and head housekeeper, I can assure you that all linen is cleaned thoroughly and kept smelling fresh in our laundry room. I apologies that you felt this was not the case in your room.

I am shocked that you felt that our breakfast was not up to standards. Breakfast in the Thyme Restaurant is one of our unique selling points and we regularly take ‘outside’ booking especially for breakfast. However, I have raised this issue with our Head Chef who is monitoring the quality in cooking and delivery from supplier.

I believe your comment in relation to a “dog” is harsh, however, you are entitled to your opinion.

I would like to thank you again for taking the time to leave your comments.

Had a pleasant stay here without anyi ssues. Extremely good value for monay due to location and standard of the hotel. I would explicitly recommend dining here as the menu has a surprising gourmet touch without the extortionate prices - which we didnt expect...
