If the European wants to brand itself as a 'business hotel', then it has a lot of work to do to bring it up to scratch. This hotel offers nothing for business customers other than extremely slow wi-fi. The decor of the hotel is terrible, it looks like I walked back into 1985 (which isn't good!). It was faded, dirty and looked like it had not been updated for over 20 years.
My room was similarly awful. Peeling wallpaper, a shiny lino bathroom floor (it felt wet even when it wasn't), cheap plastic shower head and even cheaper tacky sachets of shower gel. Also, the cups by the sink were plastic cups wrapped in a plastic wrapper - would a glass cup be too much to ask! The TV was good, but had no remote which is very annoying. The whole room looked dirty and outdated as soon as I walked in.
The lift doors take an age to open and close and even the corridors feature faded, cheap 80's wallpaper that is peeling in parts.
Evening meal (through room service) was bad. A big deal is made out of the fact that the food at the European is from Antibos - an Italian restaurant next door. Well, I looked in Antibo's and it looked more like a downmarket cafe rather than a restaurant. Lasagne was microwaved, garlic bread very hard but the cake was good (shop-bought, not made) Breakfast was the same, the cold buffet was good (where can you go wrong though!) but the hot buffet was overcooked and the food was all hard. In the welcome pack in the room, there is a discount voucher if you want to eat in the Hallmark Hotel over the road - that didn't exactly inspire me with confidence!
Overall, this hotel lives from business customers as it is the cheapest in Derby which means it has got complacent and extremely outdated, as well as a little arrogant. I don't know how it expects people who have to go to Derby a lot (like me) to return to the dump when I have now found that for only £2 more, I can stay at the far superior (and very nice) Hallmark Hotel over the road which I will be doing in future. I would recommend, even insist, that other people do the same to avoid this depressing, overrated and frankly awful experience.
