“Awful, terrible hotel, extremely under-par 80's throw-back - AVOID!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 9, 2009

If the European wants to brand itself as a 'business hotel', then it has a lot of work to do to bring it up to scratch. This hotel offers nothing for business customers other than extremely slow wi-fi. The decor of the hotel is terrible, it looks like I walked back into 1985 (which isn't good!). It was faded, dirty and looked like it had not been updated for over 20 years.

My room was similarly awful. Peeling wallpaper, a shiny lino bathroom floor (it felt wet even when it wasn't), cheap plastic shower head and even cheaper tacky sachets of shower gel. Also, the cups by the sink were plastic cups wrapped in a plastic wrapper - would a glass cup be too much to ask! The TV was good, but had no remote which is very annoying. The whole room looked dirty and outdated as soon as I walked in.

The lift doors take an age to open and close and even the corridors feature faded, cheap 80's wallpaper that is peeling in parts.

Evening meal (through room service) was bad. A big deal is made out of the fact that the food at the European is from Antibos - an Italian restaurant next door. Well, I looked in Antibo's and it looked more like a downmarket cafe rather than a restaurant. Lasagne was microwaved, garlic bread very hard but the cake was good (shop-bought, not made) Breakfast was the same, the cold buffet was good (where can you go wrong though!) but the hot buffet was overcooked and the food was all hard. In the welcome pack in the room, there is a discount voucher if you want to eat in the Hallmark Hotel over the road - that didn't exactly inspire me with confidence!

Overall, this hotel lives from business customers as it is the cheapest in Derby which means it has got complacent and extremely outdated, as well as a little arrogant. I don't know how it expects people who have to go to Derby a lot (like me) to return to the dump when I have now found that for only £2 more, I can stay at the far superior (and very nice) Hallmark Hotel over the road which I will be doing in future. I would recommend, even insist, that other people do the same to avoid this depressing, overrated and frankly awful experience.

Booked a hotel family room for 2 adults and 2 children bed and breakfast via Lastminute for a Alton Towers Visit. I was presented with a bill for the childrens breakfast on leaving. The hotel claim that only the adults are included and the children are an additional 8.25 per day.

Also local area very rough. Saw 12 policemen raiding the pub on the corner with sniffer dogs. 30 minutss + from AT.

Room OK if a little grubby.

As a group organiser, I have booked coach parties into this hotel many times. As you can imagine with a large group, there is always a change to what I had originally booked but this never seems to be a problem for the staff who are always cheerful and ready to help.
Over the past 7+ years I have used this hotel I have not had a single complaint - I really recommend it. If you feel that the cost of breakfast is a bit costly compared to other hotels, pay your money and see what you get - it is well worth it.

We stayed one night as we travelled down for the Moto GP at Donington. The hotel is around 20 minutes from Donington circuit, which was ideal for us. The rooms were clean and adequate for our stay. The price we felt was excellent especially as other hotels seemed to have increased their prices for the Moto GP event. My partner and I stayed in a double room and our relatives stayed in a family room (2 adults and a 15 year old) and they payed £50 for the room, which was the same as what we paid. I would reccomend this hotel for a short stay in Derby. The Italian restaurant on site was lovely and the atmosphere in the small bar area and the outside area was nice.

We stayed here for one night, at a cost of £40 room only. The hotel and room were both spotlessly clean, service was efficient and friendly, and the car park adequate. The hotel is situated a few minutes walk from the station and about 10 minutes from the centre of the City.

On the plus side, the Italian restaurant on site appeared to be okay, though the menu appeared to owe more to Pizza Hut than a proper Italian. there are however a range of restaurants within a couple of minutes walk, including 4 Indians, a Chinese, a Spanish, a Mexican and a Greek, as well as pubs and a much larger number of eateries in the City itself, thus adequate choice is available.

On the down side, I found the beds very hard, and the "power shower" both little more than a weak trickle and lukewarm at best. Doubtless we were unlucky in this, and given the price and the fitments - large flat screen TV, tea/ coffee facilities, etc - one should not complain.

This is not a hotel for a special treat - though neither is Derby itself - but as a place to lay one's head for a night or two, it is perfectly adequate, and price wise, very good value. We will stay again.

This is great little hotel for a short stay in Derby. Very near the Train station and walking distance of the Westfield shopping centre. Continental breakfast was included in our deal. The rooms very clean and had flat screen TV. They also had a shower/bath. The room was comfortably warm. This is the second time we have stayed here. It is hands down the best hotel in the vicinity even beating the so called 4 star Stuart Hotel around the corner.
