“Birthday surprise.”
Reviewed June 15, 2013

For my friends 40th birthday I surprised her with an afternoon experience. We had a luxury pedicure in the Clink Spa with Amy. A lovely professional lady who we felt very comfortable chatting with while we had our feet pampered. Then we went upstairs to have afternoon tea. The maître de made our choice of tea at the table and our food was swiftly brought to the table. The whole experience was lovely and definitely one that I would like to repeat or buy as a gift for someone.

This property is very nice. The guest rooms have been very well refurbished using great tradesmen and high quality fittings.
The bedroom was extremely clean and believe me I checked.I am a Housekeeping manager in a Hotel!
A work in progress, the original parke' flooring is coming loose in the ground floor corridors which is a real shame.
The residents lounge was not available due to a hen party taking place which was a pity as the Bar is tiny and was full with 10 guests already there. So we had to sit in the main foyer which had 2 small sofas and 2 small armchairs to each sofa.
I work within the Hotel industry and was disappointed to see the bar girl make 4 cocktails and then proceed to walk over empty handed to the table of 4 guests to tell them their drinks were ready on the bar! They then had to collect them themselves with no offer of the use of a tray even.
The long haired receptionist was exceptionally good and very obviously happy in her job.
Breakfast service was excellent the food was plentiful, well presented and served by a very friendly breakfast supervisor/ manager and a young chap.
I would recommend this Hotel as a nice place to stay with service provided by staff who are happy in their jobs or great actors!!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your feedback on your recent stay here at Cathedral Quarter Hotel. I will pass your comments on to our Housekeeping Manager who i'm sure will be rather pleased to her you were so impressed with the rooms cleanliness.

We have now set a date to remove the lose parquet flooring and relay some much needed carpet in those areas mentioned. I'll also look into your comments with regards to table service in the Bar 16 to ensure that the service received is second to none.

Many thanks for your detailed feedback and i look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Kind regards,

Nicholas Hough - Deputy General Manager

We have just returned from a hen weekend at this hotel and it couldn't have been better!! There were 9 of us ranging from age 25 to 65 and we all had a fabulous time.
We stayed for 2 nights and it was brilliant value, we booked through Spabreaks.com and got a great rate.
The cocktail school on friday was brilliant fun and you really need to join in to make it work. The girl who ran our class was called Cat and she was great, although we were quite hard to keep under control so I did feel for her throughout the 2 hour class!! We got to make 2 cocktails each and we were more than happy to drink them....delicious!!
The rooms were lovely, very clean and great bathrooms with both a bath and a good shower.
The food was very good, the afternoon Champagne tea was gorgeous and I have to say a big thank you to Matthew who really looked after us in the restaurant and in the private dining room throughout the weekend...bless him!!!
The spa area was lovely and relaxing and because the whole spa was booked out to our group for 2 and a half hours, we just chilled in our towelling robes (provided), had a sauna, a treatment each and it was really nice to have some time out. There is no pool, which we weren't bothered about but a Jacuzzi would have been nice in an ideal world.
We went into Town on Saturday night and I can highly recommend the restaurant "Graze", which is just a 2 minute walk away from the hotel, in fact the hotel is in a perfect location just a couple of hundred yards from the Cathedral Quarter of the town...perfect!
The staff were really helpful and they made sure our rooms were ready for us for when we arrived at 1pm, which was brilliant!!!
10 out of 10....would highly recommend this hotel

Room Tip: Ask for one on the 3rd floor, they are nicer than the 1st floor

Just come back from a Hen Weekend at the Cathedral Quarter Hotel in Derby, it was fabulous, the hotel is lovely, with great rooms, small but perfectly formed, the staff were efficient and polite. They treated us like royalty, ensuring we had everything we needed at all times, giving us private access to our own dining room and lounge. The girls in the spa were lovely and the treatments were perfect. We had exclusive use of the spa facilities which was great. The breakfast was really good with a massive choice and everything freshly cooked for us. The Champagne afternoon tea was fresh, home made and enourmous with copious amounts of tea and lovely champagne. I cannot fault the effort the staff and hotel put into making this weekend memorable for my daugher, thank you so much xxx

My daughter and I have just enjoyed a wonderful Champagne afternoon tea. The hotel is stunning, the restaurant is elegant, the service is outstanding and the cakes are delicious. We particularly adore the brownies. Without hesitation we would recommend afternoon tea in the Cathedral Quater Hotel.

After complaining to the manager I've had no response in over two weeks so this has now been passed on to the Managing DIrector of the Finesse Collection. Hopefully I'll get a response:

Usually I would put this lack of reply down to the manager being busy/away, but our party leads during our stay complained to the manager upon check out and were left disgusted by the way they were spoken to (and all complaints were met by the manager with “Well, our Trip Advisor reviews say differently”), which leads me to believe the lack of response is due to complete disregard for any negative feedback.

Being from Derby I had never stayed at the hotel before and took the occasion of a wedding as an opportunity to finally stay there.

I didn't know quite what to expect as having been twice before just for afternoon tea and leaving mightily unimpressed, I wasn't sure if I was wasting my money.

I'm disappointed to say that I did feel, yet again, unimpressed following this visit.

The hotel and room itself were both fabulous and the room was very comfortable but the problem lies with the staff who I encountered – and this is true of all three of my visits.

My three main issues were:

• The reception staff
• Bar staff
• Breakfast staff

The bride in our party had forewarned reception staff that a lot of guests would be checking in late at night following the wedding reception and we felt that the staff on shift were particularly under-prepared for this.

We had dropped our two bags off in the morning, prior to the wedding, and when we checked in we asked if our bags were still in the office behind reception. The young man (who had only been there a week, as he kept saying) didn't look in the office and told us our bags would be in one of two rooms that we had booked. When we went to the room to drop off some items, there were no bags. We then asked the man again, and asked him if they were definitely not in the office, then when he did check the office, they were there, as we had suspected.

The man on reception had made a lot of errors (issuing keys to other people's occupied rooms etc) and his excuse was that he had only been there a week. He needs to be made aware that that isn't an excuse and should be concentrating on rectifying these situations rather than making excuses.

There were issues with the bar being closed although before our arrival we had enquired about the availability of the bar upon our return, before 1am, and assured that it would be kept open and guests would be served. Upon our arrival at 12.35pm the bar was closing and the groom and father of the bride had to negotiate to keep the bar open so the wedding party could have one last drink (these discussions continued for 15-20 minutes). The bar staff made it quite clear that they were unhappy having to continue to work and when ordering drinks myself and a lot of guests were spoken to with a bad and very unhelpful attitude.

And finally, the breakfast was my third visit to the restaurant – having been for afternoon tea twice before. There seems to be a recurring theme in this restaurant: the staff disappear into the kitchen and it is always very difficult to get their attention. Service was slow, we had to reorder the same pot of tea three times and again, the excuse is always "Oh did they not bring it to you" (although I ordered it with that particular person, they had obviously passed on the order). I'm not interested in who didn't do their job, or who is new, I just want efficient service. During each of my visits I've felt like we have been forgotten about.

I had said the manager that it is disappointing to feel so strongly and feel I have to complain about my visits but I thought it best to let her know about my experiences. There were a lot of guests from outside of Derby and you could have created a lot of repeat business from these guests but the general consensus was that this venue didn't seem interested in any of its guests. I explained they really do have something very special to offer but the staff let them down beyond belief. Let's hope we get a response from higher up!

Room Tip: Wait for the Bell Hotel on Sadler Gate to open its doors! Or try the Jurys Inn.

We stayed at this hotel for 1 night. We booked one double room for my husband and I and one single room for our daughter. We stayed on B and B terms and having looked at the online brochure were expecting a 'quality' experience. Sadly the visit did not live up to our hopes. the entrance to the hotel and the reception area are quite grand in appearance with a large staircase leading to the restaurant, overlooked by a large stained glass window. However, this area would benefit from more seating, in order to cope with people unable to get a seat in the bar area.
On arrival we went straight to out rooms to freshen up. Our rooms were on the top floor and it has to be said are the smallest rooms we have ever stayed in. My daughter had to do a shuffle around a standard lamp, to get into her bed. The rooms were well furnished, although some of the fixtures and fittings in the bathroom seemed ill fitted and loose. The beds were also quite short. Having eaten out in Derby during the day we decided to eat in the bar area, expecting quality food and service. Initially we could not get into the bar area and the receptionist apologised because the bar was full with a party waiting to go into the restaurant. After another 10 minutes of standing in the reception area (No seats free), we finally got into the bar. After ordering out food we relaxed looking forward to our sandwiches. After some time the food arrived and I noticed the bread was dried out and actually beginning to curl up at the corners. When I mentioned this to the waiter he just said it was because they had been on the pass (obviously under the heat lamp) He then asked me what I wanted him to do and whether he wanted me to take them back. Really I should have said yes but by this time we were ready to eat so I said to leave it. (Actually I didn't feel it was up to me to say either. I would have expected that this food should not have been sent out from the kitchen in the first place.) I grudgingly paid for the food and drinks there and then, so that checkout would involve simply paying for the B and B (more of that later) After our experience in the bar we were very worried that the breakfast might disappoint. However it was delicious and we thoroughly enjoyed every bit. On checking out we asked for the bill, only to find that we had a bar bill added to our tariff. I pointed out that this was not ours and showed my bar receipt from the bill I had already paid. Admittedly the incorrect bar tariff was quickly removed but I had to wonder how it had been put onto our room tariff in the first place. Room cards might be a good way to reduce the chances of this happening again
Overall we were disappointed with our experience of this hotel
