My wife and I stumbled across Blackfriars - a C13th Monstery. Worth a walk around, particularly the upstairs of the hall at the back of the site where the monks used to sit in their 'cellular areas' by the window studying and writing.

The remains of a medieval Priory, complemented by an intelligent modern extension and hired out as a venue. Perhaps the most interesting part is the scriptorium, described as possibly the oldest surviving library in England. Though that's a bit of a swizz when it has no books in it. What is does have though is the individual cubicles the monks sat in to work on their manuscripts, and the splayed windows giving them the greatest possible light to work in. And if you are into roofs, please feel free to admire the scissor bracing.

These buildings have a fascinating history. An excellent guided tour showed us not only beautifully restored rooms, but clear and plentiful evidence of the life of the friars who lived and worked there so long ago. Some of the features are unique in the UK. Highly recommended.

A beautiful building in the centre of Gloucester which overlooked by a lot of locals, but I'm glad to say more and more people are realising what a great heritage we have here. CONGRATS to English Heritage and all involved in the restoration and upkeep of this lovely old priory.
