Ripon Cathedral
Ranked #8 of 68 things to do in Harrogate
Certificate of Excellence

We have visited Ripon Cathedral as a family on the occasion of my parents' 50th Wedding Anniversary and again on their 60th anniversary. The cathedral hosts an annual celebration in June for Yorkshire couples who have achieved these amazing wedding dates and it's a wonderful event. New Year's Eve 2012/13 my husband and I were at the candlelit service and walked into town with the other worshippers to see in the New Year. In June we took our 3 year old granddaughter to visit the Cathedral and she was made very welcome by the stewards, and they talked to her in a language she could understand about the building. I love Ripon Cathedral.

This is one of our loveliest small cathedrals whether for a concert, study of the architecture or simply to sit quietly and drink in the atmosphere. Ripon is a delightful small town totally enhanced by this beautiful spiritual haven.

The cathedral has fantastic features such as medieval misericords and the 7th century crypt. as well as architecture from a variety of periods. There are friendly guides to welcome you and tell you its history and there are fact sheets to point out the most interesting. Entry is free although donations are requested but no one rattles a collection box at you as has happened to me when visiting other cathedrals. Make sure you see the wooden hand that helped the choristers keep time to the music.

We have visited lots of old churches and cathedrals in our time. We find Ripon to be the best, it is full of history and a lot of things that you can relate to. We will be back there very soon.
