Went for a relaxed walk with the family. Bit chilly but alway good for a Sunday afternoon stroll. Excellent for the children to run around.

Enjoyable walk from Harrogate town to Harlow Carr. Quick coffee and cake in the branch of Betty's tea room there. We visited in winter and had an interesting walk around. Particularly interesting were the gardens through history exhibition. There seems to be plenty of activities for children. The shop was well stocked as are all the RHS gardens.

My husband and I visited here last week, it's fair to say the weather was dull and cold, which does rather impact on a garden visit. However, apart from the Alpine House, which has some stunning plants in flower at the moment, we did not find the gardens very exciting compared to others we have visited. The changes that have been put in recently have not enhanced the gardens in my opinion, and the recent wet weather also means that many areas are closed off due to waterlogging. More needs to be done to make the garden interesting all the year round, such as sculpture and installations, some more enclosed areas and more delineation of areas by themes which draw you in. The garden centre and shop are also uninspiring, the garden centre has very feew of the plants which are on show in the garden, and is very expensive. All together I found it a disappointing visit.

Stopping in the middle of town, caught the Number 6 Pannal bus from the bus station that takes you up the hill and drops you outside the gardens, £2 single unless you have a bus pass. Ask the driver for a free Heritage Voucher which allows you half price entrance. On return, take the downhill walk back into town via the pinewoods and Valley Gardens. Extremely pleasant and not too taxing.

I have visited Harlow Carr Gardens many times as a member of the RHS. The gardens are always spectacular whatever the season or month. There are lovely walks around the grounds and plenty places to sit and just enjoy the peace and wonderful planting. I often take my young grandchildren in the school holidays and the RHS always puts on some great activities (look on their website for info) which they really enjoy. There is also a brilliant play area for children, a bird hide and a maze. There is also a pond which they love to look at in spring/summer and identify all the pondlife and dragonflies. Plenty to keep them happy all day. Betty's tea room is lovely and child friendly although if you want to save on the eating costs there are plenty places to enjoy a picnic in the grounds and Betty's also have a cabin where they serve drinks and snacks in the gardens with a lovely seating area. Staff are always helpful and friendly and the toilet and baby change facilities are some of the best I have seen. There is good disabled access to all areas. The shop and plant shop areas always have nice things to purchase and the library is excellent if you want to read up on your plants. A great place to visit!
