Old Swan Hotel
Ranked #17 of 28 Hotels in Harrogate
Reviewed November 16, 2012

Harrogate is lovely at any time of year. A visit to Harlow Carr and lunch at Betty's followed by retail therapy was just what we needed. The Old Swan is in a beautiful location near to the town centre. The front of house staff were very helpful and polite. Unfortunately this time the food and service in the restaurant was not as good as previously but the hotel made amends by reducing our bill.

The Old Swan isn't a bad hotel, but it is let down by a 'faded glory' appearance and the rooms are rather variable.
Famous for being Agatha Chrisite's hiding place in December 1926, nowadays it has coach loads tourists using it as an overnight stop whilst visiting the area. It is conveniently located a short walk from the middle of the town.
The main dining/function room is nice with an impressive roof and the breakfast is quite good.
Worth a look.

This was the fourth time we have stayed at the Old Swan and we enjoyed our stay. We were on a discounted two night stay and this was good value with breakfast and dinner included. It is an old hotel and some of the floors are creaky, but no real problem. It was nice and warm, although the radiator controls in the bedroom were difficult to adjust.

The staff were all excellent and made you feel welcome. Unfortunately the quality of the dinner was not very good and we complained and were given a bottle of wine to make up for our disappointment, but feel the chef was having a bad night!

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front and high up to avoid noise from the floor

We have stayed at this hotel many times, including attendance at 4 New Years Eve Balls. The NYE events are a great night and highly recommended. Food and service on special occasions is exemplary. Some of the rooms are a little basic for the price, but others are magnificent.

I felt this hotel was a little overpriced. Location is everything and the building is astonishing but for £120 a night my room was underwhelming. Small and oddly shaped, the decor was neither vintage or contemporary but somewhere inbetween and the flat screen TV could only be watched if it was set at an odd angle on the furniture. On the plus side a teapot was provided. Express booking out is offered and I would suggest its use as booking out was a frustrating prolonged business. Coincidentally the conference I attended had its social gethering in this hotel, these thugs are hard to stage as they are catering for a diverse and slightly odd mish mash of colleagues and strangers . On a scale of dire to average the food and atmosphere of this one was closer to the dire end of the spectrum. However I have had past experience of a really good one here so maybe it was just unfortunate.
The public areas of this hotel are lovely and obviously room price reflects the facilities as a whole , but my room was dissappointing.

A small group of us had afternoon tea in the lounge/bar, courtesy of some red-letter-day vouchers. We all really enjoyed it. The food was good, the surroundings were pleasant and the service was excellent, with nothing being too much trouble. A very enjoyable afternoon.

This was our third stay at The Old Swan and once again we can not fault this wonderful old hotel which is full of old charm and history, its staff are lovely and hard working. For those who are looking for a new hotel with plastic window frames, none creeky floors, level floors and the new build feel go somewhere else as this hotel has wooden window frames and creeky floors and major charactor, the clue is in the name "The OLD Swan Hotel". If you like the old feel, the old style comfort and you like warm and friendly people this is the hotel for you. We would like to thank the staff who worked damn hard at breakfast time the weekend that we stayed (26th-29th oct 2012) and all bar a few snobby impatience people everybody gave good coments and praised the staff for their hard work.

Room Tip: if you are a tall or valuptous person you would be more comfortable in an executive double room.
