“Nice to experience”
Reviewed March 3, 2013

Been many times & will continue to visit. Always enjoy the afternoon tea!
Really enjoy the atmosphere , not the most amazing food & cakes I ever tasted but still a nice little treat. I prefer the tea rooms in York. Really look forward to choosing a cake off the trolley as a special extra treat.

“Lovely vegetarian lunch”
Reviewed February 28, 2013

Visited with my husband and adult son on 26 February 2013. First visit though we had been to other Bettys in York and Harlow Carr. We queued outside for ten minutes tops and had rooms explained to us and copies of the two menus while we waited. Two tables had been put together for the three of us, otherwise we would have struggled. We all had soup: tomato and fennel with crusty bread, followed by open sandwiches: the men loved their goats cheese and beetroot whilst I had olive tapenade, sliced avocado and roast peppers on very good bread. Sandwiches alone would not have sufficed but with the soup we were certainly replete. It was delicious and fresh, but it will be a while before I return because those were the vegetarian options, it would have been nice to see more choice. Service was excellent, staff were friendly and helpful. We didn't feel at all rushed although there was always a queue. It cost about £40 for three of us (we just had the pleasant tap water to drink) which I thought v reasonable for the quality, setting and service.

“National treasure in God's own county”
Reviewed February 28, 2013

I have visited many times over the years mostly with family, and they are so consistently good that there ought to be a separate award just for this ... Most recently I visited for breakfast with my mother who was on a respite day away from looking after my father. Service is always excellent and unhurried, no matter how busy they are (and they are most of the time.) We usually have the haddock and chips, which is always good, but this time had eggs benedict which was excellent, followed by croissants. Tea is always brought first, and it is one of the few places where you do not need to stir the pot first to get a decent cup (ie strong!). This visit set the tone of the whole day, especially for my mother - so top marks to Betty's for this, and for keeping standards high over very many years.

“Forget about Tea, have Dinner instead”
Reviewed February 26, 2013

Although Betty's is famous for its afternoon tea, the queues, especially at a weekend, are testament to that, I would recommend going a little later and having dinner. The food is excellent, the service second to none and the atmosphere is complemented with live background music in the form of a piano player. Taking these things into consideration, dinner is very good value for money; the price is no more than any other restaurant.
