“Tired & worn, needs some TLC”
Reviewed February 8, 2010

We stayed here recently after finding this hotel on the internet. The website was great, the hotel looked so charming so we were really looking forward to arriving. Outside, all the hotel's charm was very evident, but unfortuantly what we found inside was a tired, worn hotel, in desperate need of an injection of TLC.
It's very obvious that this hotel was once very beautiful, but it would seem that standards have slipped. Our room was out-dated & the bathroom had no shampoos, etc, just some hand soap. The grouting in the bath/shower wasn't great.
We had breakfast (very nice) in the downstairs lounge which, again, had definitely seen much better days. Sadly, our cutlery and sugar bowl wern't very clean either.
As I said, charming location, but could seriously do with some TLC.

We first had our wedding reception in this hotel just a few years ago. It was a lovely hotel and their service was excellent and the food beautiful. No-one faulted the hospitality, cleanliness or amenities in the rooms when many of my family and friends stayed there in 2006.
So when my husband and I were looking for a nice place to enjoy our anniversary recently, we decided to go back to the hotel.
We were surprised to see so many cut backs as a result of the recession.
We ate a beautiful meal in the restaurant though the decor was worn and in desperate need of fixing up. Peeling wallpaper and painted over masking tape that was falling off, old and very tired looking curtains were really letting it down. The cutlery and tableware was mismatched too which didn't give a very good impression for a hotel of that standard. The hotel was very clean and comfortable throughout and there was entertainment laid out for everyone in the bar.
My biggest gripe was that there was no lounge staff in sight the whole night. I only saw waiting staff in the restaurant but outside of that, none. That meant we couldn't enjoy ordering drinks from our table in the residents lounge. We had to go to the bar each time which was very small and crowded. It put me off too that no glasses, bottles or plates from previous drinkers were removed from any of the tables until the very end of the night. Also, the reception was unmanned for most of the night leaving some frustrated guests to wait . The barman seemed to double as a receptionist a couple of times during the night but not always available and thus some guests just gave up waiting.

Also, we were staying in the lodge across the road which we didn't find out about until arrival though I didn't mind too much until we realised the restaurant there was closed and there was no-one on the desk there. We had to go to the main hotel to have breakfast as they no longer serve it in the lodge. I didn't like that but can understand it was probably necessary to keep costs down. None of this was explained to us on arrival though. I had presumed (like our wedding guests previous stay) that breakfast would be served in the lodge. I had to find out from other guests that it was actually in the main hotel, across a busy, icy road instead.
Despite all this, we enjoyed our stay and the food was excellent and prices in both the restaurant and bar were very reasonable overall but it felt more like a B&B than a hotel. It would be a good place to stay if you needed a place to rest your head and have somewhere to eat but lacking something that I couldn't put my finger on. In saying that, I'd recommend it to a friend purely as a stopover hotel and not so much for a holiday.
