This is an interesting place to spend an hour learning about the history of the gaol and general approach to crime and punishment at the time. There are exhibits in each cell on different topics, some interactive. An interesting piece on transportation to America and Australia too. Other reviews mention an introduction by someone, but we didn’t get that, just told to go straight into the self guided tour. Free parking right outside is a bonus.

We really enjoyed our visit to the gaol a fascinating insight into its gruesome history. Our teen loved the dungeon and enjoyed doing the quiz. Great staff and fantastic interactive exhibits, highly recommended.

This place is well worth a visit, historically very informative, hauntingly memorable, great bearded guide, pleasant lady in gift shop, fabulous food and pleasant staff in café. Tour at your leisure after the initial intro and you can really learn so much. A really great experience and if in the area do it. We loved.

This historic old gaol is a fun place to visit. With its foreboding and impressive exterior to its repressive interior it covers quite a bit of Irish history, especially the 1798 rebellion.

The cost of admission is quite reasonable, especially for the detailed stories and the length of the tour. There's a gift shop and a small restaurant when you first enter the gaol.

I believe they are changing to a more high-tech tour--it looked like VR was being installed.

The tour starts off with a "welcome" by a jailer who right away gets into the gritty details of life in the gaol. Conditions were harsh and the jailers could make a lot of money by pocketing the "allowance" they had for each prisoner in their "care".

After the conversation with the jailer the rest of the tour is self-paced and you can take as long as needed to read the stories out side the cells. Some of the cells have prerecorded stories about prior inmates. Conditions are described in detail, along with the sentences assigned to some crimes. There's even a piece about the Irish who were shipped off to Australia.

You learn about punishment that was doled out to keep the prisoners in line, including a terrible treadmill (like a Jacob's ladder in a gym, only you can't stop).

The visit took us about 90 minutes. There's parking right outside the entrance to the gaol or you can park at the pier nearby.

It's definitely a place to bring children and teenagers.

Amazing place to learn all about the historic jailers that were held there and also about the hauntings of the jail itself. The staff were helpful to answer any question we had and their knowledge was top notch
