Description: Listed in The McKenna Guide Best 100 Restaurants in Ireland 2014.In the heart of Waterford City is a restaurant that champions the local food experience. Vaguely Spanish in decor with a funky eclectic mix of food and ambiance that may well be described as Mediterranean. Most definitely, not a conventional Irish restaurant experience. Critics and regulars alike acknowledge this place is fun and different. With early bird menus from €20, this is an affordable treat in a relaxed atmosphere. But it's worth persevering according to the critics:" With its warm Mediterranean colour, this place would bring the sun out on the darkest of days" Georgina Campbell "Much loved menu that hits all the right buttons" The Irish Times"It's a dream vision of owners - Cormac & Donagh - who stamp their left field imprimatur on the excellent food & the fine drinks that make folk flock here in their droves" John & Sally McKenna"Bodega! Gives the taste of the med, and also the vigour & joie de vivre of the med" Bridgestone Guide

The eating area itself is lovely however we found the food to be way over priced for what we got. The wine list is good but again pricey.

Dear lolalake,
Thank you for taking the time to give us a review. I'm glad you enjoyed our dining room.
I am sorry that you found us to be expensive. I will try to explain briefly our prices. As you can see on our menus, we have a lot of local products, a lot of free range products & even some organic. 95% of our menu is Irish and 100% traceable. Considering all the bad press at the moment regarding the food industry, we are delighted that our menu is so transparent where we source our products. But, our products ARE premium and we have to pay premium prices, Ihave no problem paying more and in general most of our customers feel the same, we are also protecting local jobs at the same time. It would be extremely easy to source our raw materials elsewhere, for much cheaper, therefore bringing the price to you the customer down. Believe me, there are plenty of restaurants locally doing it, that we have to compete with, but you are not getting the same product. Where you think is good value, do they list where they source their products?
Most of our comments state that we are good value, so I suppose it depends on what you order as well. If you order Tom Kearney's Rack of Lamb or Joe Mallon's 8oz Irish Fillet steak, they will cost you €28, but you can also order 3 courses from the a la carte for less than €28 for all 3. You can spend as much or as little as you want. We have a 4 course Slow Food Menu available all night, every night for €29.90. Our early bird menu is bananas busy, which to me would indicate people think it's good value.
As for the wine, before the VAT increase, we had 14 wines under €20, which by restaurant standards is seen as good value. They are now at €20.50.
We have 16 employees with high rent.. what are we to do?!:)

I hope this may help to explain our prices and hope to see you back in again.

Friendly restaurant offering good food at a good price. Friendly staff. Its a great place for lunch. Can be a bit noisy. Quirky kind of place.
They serve lots of different wines by the glass.

A group of us went for the early bird in Bodega for a catch up and enjoy some lovely food. We weren't disappointed! We had bottles of red and white wine which were lovely. Our orders were taken efficiently and soon we got our starters which were eaten with satisfaction - biggest approval was given to the Chicken Wings, large portion of hot tasty wings. The mains were satisfying and with bellys nicely full we threw caution to the diets and went for desserts. I have the bread and butter pudding which was beautiful and comforting and was served with a tangy fruit ice cream which was a lovely contrast to the warm, sweet pudding.
The atmosphere in the Bodega was calm but sophisticated. Food was worth the money and we'll return again.

My family visited Bodega over the weekend for a special occasion. The evening was wonderful from start to finish. Starters were 2 celeriac and walnut soups, and fish cakes. Mains were 3 steaks, fish pie and rack of lamb. Desserts were a Crème Brulee, chocolate souffle and a bread and butter pudding made from a blaa. Our 3 year old son had cajun chicken gougons with chips and he was made a great fuss of. The value was exceptional for wonderful food and service.

Hi blaa_in_exile!!

Thank you so much for your wonderful review!! Always a pleasure to read such reviews! Glad your son enjoyed his freshly made chicken goujons! I have a 2 1/2 year old myself and know that it can be tricky eating out, that's partly why I want families to have fun, and RELAX!! Purely selfish on my part!!:) It really is a pleasure looking after families (As long as they have regard for other diners somewhat, and don't have pinball Children!). Hope to see you again so and really hope you are not in exile too long:(

Nice place, great atmosphere and very good food. The "special" mushroom soup and the beef were great!
