My mother is a Gara and visited the castle in 1973. I visited in 1995. It is a ruin, surrounded by livestock fields, overlooking a graveyard offering eternal rest for many O'Garas and Garas, with a distant view of Lough Gara. The spot is peaceful and verdant, the ruin heaves from the ground, and when I was there, a clutch of old red-headed gravediggers leaned on the implements of their trade.
You will find the castle somewhat outside of Sligo near the tiny hamlet of Gurveen.
