A bit challenging for those not used to hiking. Allow time. Portable toilet in parking lot is only facility along the route. Incredible view from the top. We did an evening climb after other tourist sites were closed.

“Climbing Knocknarea”
Reviewed October 15, 2013

One has only to be reasonably fit to climb, the view from the top is spectacular on a clear day which we were lucky with.

“Capturing the Natural Beauty of Ireland and Revelling in the Myths of Sligo”
Reviewed September 24, 2013

We were encouraged to take this walk from our hosts at a local B & B. We arrived at a parking lot with a portable toilet on site; I later found that this was very convenient. The walk took about two hours and we did not feel rushed. We walked the trail through pastures and we greeted the cows and we were greeted by some people on a horse trailride that day. As we hiked to the top we paused often to view the beautiful landscape of the surrounding area. It took about 45 minutes to reach the top of Knocknarea which by legend is where Queen Maeve is believed to be buried. Her remains are buried under a rock cairn which extends 10 meters in height and visitors are encouraged to bring a rock and add to the cairn. I donated a rock to the cause as I found that Ireland has its good share of rocks. I have added to Maeve’s resting place and made my mark. I encourage those who walk the trail to bring a walking stick as it does get a little steep in spots and on a rainy/ drizzling day it could get slippery. Upon reaching the peak – you will see a 360° view that will knock your socks off. Give it a try – you will be glad you did.

“Unbelieveable”

When you look upon Knocknarea from a few miles, it is awesome. The immensity of the cairn is immediately evident. When you view it from 20 miles, and still see the cairn prominently, it's doubly incredible. 5400 years old! Wow. Wow.

“Great View”
Reviewed September 14, 2013

The hike to the top is definitely strenuous for those not accustomed to hiking, but the view from the top is pretty spectacular. Just be prepared for the possibility of rain and wind on the top. It can feel somewhat like being in an ice storm.
