Makes you feel at one with nature and all the people who have come before us. Amazing to think how people managed to reach here thousands of years ago.

A visit to Carrowkeel is more than a jaunt up into the mountains on an unpaved road, it is a privileged entry to a hidden realm, a limnal passage into a remote past. I've been there a half-dozen times over the past 30 years, and it never fails to amaze. you can spend a half-hour, or you can spend a time trekking to the less-visited cairns.

Out of the way, hard to find, good hike. If you're up for an adventure then this is worth the trip. Chances are there won't be anyone around and you are free to explore inside the many tombs.

The farmer/owner of our B&B recommended we visit this site instead of the more crowded, similar one at Sligo. Even with his detailed instructions we could have easily missed it. Definitely off the beaten track but then we were the only ones there and we explored at our leisure. Beautiful site, once you make the extended but fairly easy hike , overlooking Lough Arrow. There are a number of tombs and no commercialization. It was really a treat.

Carrowkreel is an incredible site of 5400 year old megalithic portal tombs in the mountains accessed by muddy sheep lanes. It may have been sleeting (horizontally) a wee bit as we climbed from one cairn to the next - but well worth the effort.
