“Great service, poor, poor, food.”
Reviewed May 29, 2010

Every member of staff in the Sligo park, were amazing. Polite, friendly and happy to help with anything. Our room was spacious and well laid out. We particularly liked the table and two chairs, where we could sit and drink coffee in the mornings. The room was pristine, every time we returned after it had been serviced. The leisure centre was excellent, no need to even bring a towel down as they will provide you with whatever you need. Again, wonderful staff. In the Rathanna bar, the staff were great, full of craic and happy to tell you where the best spots in Sligo were. The first night we ate here, perfectly adequate pub grub. However we were most excited to sample the breakfast and indeed our evening meal in the Hazelwood. The breakfast the next morning was most disapointing, due to low numbers, the hot buffet was off (understandable) and we were asked to order what we wanted, we both ordered full Irish. Both came out terribly dried up, skins on the beans, bacon looked as if it had been pulled off a christmas turkey after hours of roasting. That evening we decided to have our evening meal in the 30euro per head Hazelwood. The food was terrible, for starters I was given slices of cold chicken with a dollop of mayo and a few lettuce leaves straight out of a bag of mixed leaves. Oh and a few unsliced tomatoes for good measure. I'm sure a 12 year old could have presented it better. Presentation means very little if the taste is there, alas it wasn't. For mains I had chicken wrapped in bacon stuffed with spinach, I expressed concern that the chicken would be dried out, but my partner reminded me it was wrapped in bacon and should be ok. Again, alas, we were wrong, chicken was flavourless and terribly dry. And the christmas turkey bacon, returned to haunt me. I can only presume the chef is an apprentice or a chef who has absolutely no passion for the food he/she serves. I've eaten better food at a local caf. 30euro a head...are you joking?? The service I was provided with in the Sligo park was TREMENDOUS, but the food was dire. We will be back, but will certainly not be eating in-house.

Just back from a weekend break in the beautiful Sligo. Had originally booked into the Clarion Hotel but having read the reviews on Tripadvisor thought the Park sounded better and changed!! How in God's name this hotel is rated four star is absolutely beyond me. On arrival we were a bit taken aback by the extremely dated decor . The hotel is 50 years old this year and it would appear very little has changed in those 50 years. We truly felt we had been caught in a time warp! Our room was average ( shower didn't work properly) No bottled water in the room which would be fairly basic in most four star hotels and the breakfast was appalling! A buffet that was surely cooked hours before any unfortunate residents arose...rubbery rashers ....scrambled eggs sitting in a pool of yellow liquid... fried eggs congealing for hours ..a contraption for making your own toast if you could call what emerged from it toast! We had booked on a bed breakfast and evening meal basis but knew after the first mouthful of breakfast that we would be skipping the evening meal!! At no stage during our 3 night stay did anyone ask if everything was alright and even as we checked out we were not asked had we enjoyed our stay!! Our answer would have been certainly that we enjoyed our stay in Sligo but that we certainly did not enjoy The Park!

Dear Guest

Thank you for selecting the Sligo Park Hotel and Leisure Club for your recent break. We were glad to see you refer to 'beautifu'l Sligo. Indeed Sligo is very beautiful.

However we read with concern the rest of your review. Yes we are happily celebrating 40 successful years this year. I assure you the Sligo Park Hotel has had continuous investment over its 40 years. It is disappointing that the décor didn’t appeal to your particular taste.

We are especially concerned about your remarks regarding your breakfast and this is being addressed. It is standard procedure that your satisfaction would be checked while here, I am sorry that this didn’t happen as we may have had a chance to rectify these matters.

I also want to apologise to you for providing you with a weekend which was a disappointment to you. We are not happy about this. As you have pointed out, this is not a reflection of what most guests have said about Sligo Park Hotel and Leisure Club. Thank you for taking the time to post your review, your feedback is very valuable to us and will be acted upon. We are glad to read that you enjoyed your stay in Sligo.

If you care to discuss your thoughts with me at any time, I would be delighted to hear from you. If you decide to return to Sligo Park we would be delighted to welcome you back

Kind regards

Visited hotel week before Easter for a short three day break with 7 year old daughter. Easy to find hotel with loads of car parking. Hotel is dated decor wise and when we arrived was worried about this but from moment of checking in and friendly welcome the decor was practically forgotten. Room was very spacious for two of us (with free Wifi access) but empty & dirty glasses not removed every day (small quibble but annoying!). The hotel had organised an Easter treasure hunt for the kids which was brilliant and we really enjoyed with all children getting an egg at the end of it - a thoughtful idea we thought and really appreciated. Food at breakfast - what you would expect from buffet style breakfast; dinner time above average. Staff in restaurant and bar most helpful and friendly and all you had to do was ask and they were more than willing to accomodate.

My only big quibble with the hotel and it is a big one is in relation to the leisure centre. My 7 year old daughter is at the age where she thinks she can swim and can but is not an Olympic swimmer (if you know what I mean) and over the Easter break hotel had fun times for children in the afternoons (we were there week before Easter). One afternoon of this fun time there were approx 20 children in the pool and while there were three or four lifeguards on duty there was only one at most times patrolling the pool whilst the others chatted in the little room off the side of the pool - did mention this and two lifeguards then appeared on duty but to me this was not sufficient for amount of children in pool. For this reason hotel only gets three stars not four and not a recommendation for children who want to participate in pool organised activities by the hotel.

Dear FS

Thank you for choosing the Sligo Park Hotel and Leisure Club for your recent short break. We are glad to read you had such an enjoyable time with the treasure hunt etc. Thank you for mentioning your concerns about safety in the pool. There is no issue more important in the leisure centre than the safety of our patrons.

The Sligo Park Health and Leisure Club has held a White Flag Award since 2005, which has strict criteria in this regard. During fun sessions, it is hotel policy that one lifeguard is on poolside duty (rotated every 20 minutes) and one is stationed in the raised glass area, which has the advantage of being higher than the guard on deck level. Other staff cover reception duties, enquiries etc. We hope this assurance will help alleviate your concerns however we would be delighted to talk it over with you should you wish to contact us directly. Once again sincere thanks for posting your valuable feedback.

Just got back from Sligo. I love it, I hadn't really been in Sligo before. The Hotel is easy to find, good value for money with a lovely leisure centre. I noticed that the leisure centre was used by a lot of locals, as was the Bar, which is really nice. We found all locals to be very friendly. The hotel has a big car park. The room was a decent size, clean with a good shower and free Internet. We requested a 6 seater taxi which was no problem our Taxi driver was very Friendly and came back for us at 10.30 to bring us back to the Hotel.Breakfast was very nice both mornings with plenty of choice and was kept well stocked. I didn't have to ask for anything which is not always the case. We had Dinner there one of the nights I loved the Smoked chicken and Avocado salad starter and my mother had the Lamb Cutlets as her Main course which were also excellent. The staff in the Bar and Dinning Room were really friendly as was the woman who cleaned our room. The Hotel isn't in the Town but it doesn't claim to be not like some other Hotels. I will definitely be back again.

Its very easy to find without having to go into Sligo itself.
While first impression is that the building is a a bit dated the staff welcome is both warm and efficient and the level of warmth from all staff throughout our stay was very noticeable.
We used the pool and tennis courts and the hotel as a base for touring around. The lobby area is quite spacious but maybe a little dark.
We had a bit of a problem with our initial room but were moved without fuss.
We ate from the bar food and the restaraunt and would agree that the restaurant menu could be a bit livelier (sea bass as special twice in three days) and also the layout of the buffet at breakfast could probably be better to prevent queues - though that maybe was because the place was full - a good sign. I've included these couple of negatives because I notice the management respond to criticism and mention an improvement programme. Don't know what they can do about the crows but maybe the warning sign could be bigger. We would definitely return .

Dear AD

Thank you for your very positive review following your recent break at the Sligo Park Hotel and Leisure Club. It is good to hear that you found the hotel easily and that on arrival your welcome was warm and efficient, which you also noticed throughout your stay. Its good to hear also that you got good use of the great facilities at the hotel and enjoyed touring the spectacular Sligo scenery.
It shouldn’t happen that the special dish of the evening would appear twice during your short stay, we will have noted this error on our part, thank you for mentioning it.
Patrons tend to favour the range of choice offered by buffet service. In addition to the cooked Irish Breakfast, the cold buffet display offers a wide variety of fruit, yougurts, juices, breads etc. Such is the choice that sometimes people can take a little extra time deliberating. Yes it may well be a good sign that the hotel is such a popular choice with so many people making it quite busy.
Thank you for your account of your stay and thank you for choosing the Sligo Park Hotel and Leisure Club, we hope you will be back soon.

Dining Area and Menu a little tired - probably overdue a revamp - the food itself was unimaginative. Otherwise - Good Location, Great Rooms and Very Friendly Staff - especially Arthur in the Dining Room. Despite a large convention taking place, the Hotel is so designed that the rooms are located in a quieter area. Great base for visiting Lough Gill/Yeats Country, Strandhill to see the Surfers & Rosses Point.

Dear DL 2010

Thank you for choosing the Sligo Park Hotel and Leisure Club recently for your accommodation in Sligo. Thank you also for taking the time to post your very positive review. We welcome your feedback very much.

At the Sligo Park Hotel , we offer a number of dining options. These include the very popular Hazelwood Reataurant with a la Carte and Table d’Hote menu, the Rathanna Bar which offers a varied and very competitively priced Bar Menu, (this is available throughout the day) and there is also a room service option. Banquets, receptions and events are catered for in the various private banqueting suites. It is very disappointing therefore to hear that you were not impressed with the choice of food.

It is unclear if you were attending a conference where the menu selection for the conference banquet or conference lunch would have been guided by the hotel but sometimes may reflect the personal preference of a conference organiser.

We are so glad you enjoyed the great rooms, which are really well located and are away from the Sligo Park Conference and Banqueting facilities.

Thank you for your compliment to the staff and to one staff member in particular.

It is great to hear of guests of the Sligo Park getting to enjoy Lough Gill, Yeats Country, Rosses Point and the surfing at Strandhill.

We look forward to welcoming you back in the future

Kind regards

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Sligo Park for Easter Saturday and Sunday night to celebrate our 2 year anniversary. We were looking for somewhere modern and comfortable and the website for the hotel certainly made it look modern and comfortable. Firstly, we were glad that the hotel was easy to find, as we had come from Tullamore and were checking in quite late on Saturday night. Check in was effecient and friendly so we had no problem there. First impressions of the hotel was that the lobby was dated and the hallway to our room was dark, narrow and there was a smell of damp at the lift lobby on the ground floor. Lightbulbs and lightshades were missing from some of the light fixtures and it looked sloppy that these were not replaced. Our room was at the end of the corridor in what appeared to be a newer section of the hotel and it was comfortable if basic. The bed was very comfortable and I can't fault the housekeeping for the standard of bed linen and turndown. However, the next morning the corridor was littered with trolleys, room service trays etc and it made it difficult to navigate the corridor when meeting other guests. Empty food trays and trolleys were still in the hall in the afternoon making it look untidy. Obviously housekeeping have to have trolleys in the hall to do their job but they were everywhere and we felt the empty trays should be removed on a more timely basis. We were waiting around 15 minutes for a table for breakfast, which we didn't mind as the hotel was very busy. Mr. O'Dea in the restaurant was helpful in showing us to a table but no member of staff came to our table after that to offer us any further assistance. The hot buffet breakfast was average and, as noted by another review, the plates were scorching hot and we had trouble getting them out of the dispenser even with napkins. We had dinner in the restuarant on Sunday evening and our table was ready when we arrived. Mr. O'Dea was again very helpful especially as I am a coeliac and require gluten free food. He organised this for me in a very helpful fashion. We did not like the restaurant decora s we felf it is in desperate need of a facelift. It was loud and crowded and we were glad to have been given a booth which was slightly more private than the seats in the middle of the floor. We did not go into the bar during our stay and we did not bother with breakfast on the 2nd morning, even though it was part of our deal. The receptionist who checked us out on Monday morning was friendly and helpful, however our bill was incorrect with a €13.00 half bottle of wine being charged at €33.95. This did not pose a big problem as the receptionist sorted it quickly with the restaurant but it was a little annoying. We were glad to be on the road and do not think we will be rushing back to Sligo!
Overall, I would not recommend this hotel to a couple looking for a place to get away for a romantic weekend. While it had some good points (tasty restuarant evening meal, comfy bed, good friendly service in restaurant) it was overall dated and tired, and we felt it was overpriced for what we got. It is hard to see how this hotel qualifies as a 4 star. It might be more suitable for a family with children than a couple.

Dear K 29

Thank you for choosing the Sligo Park Hotel and Leisure Club for your recent short break and thank you for taking the time to post your detailed review on trip advisor.
It is good to note that you found the hotel easily, that your check in was efficient and friendly and that your room and bed were very comfortable.

As you so rightly point out, hotel corridors are used to access rooms for servicing as well as for guests to come and go. I am sorry that in your experience this made navigation difficult and took from your enjoyment of your stay. We will address the issues of the trays in the corridors – they are normally collected mid morning and again mid afternoon.

Thank you for your kind remarks on one restaurant staff member in particular. We focus on efficient service to guests with special dietary requirements, thank you for pointing out the helpful fashion in which this was organised.

I have noted the shortcomings you pointed out and these will be addressed with care in our programme for continuous improvement. In the meanwhile, I must apologise to you for your disappointment with your short break at the Sligo Park Hotel and Leisure Club.

Should you reconsider and decide to revisit at any stage in the future, I would be glad to make you especially welcome.

Once again sincere thanks for your valuable feedback.

Kind regards
