Michael picked us up at 8 a.m. at our hotel and we were off in his very comfortable car to visit Newgrange, Monasterboice, Hill of Tara, Bective Abbey and Trim Castle plus drive-bys of The Battle of the Boyne site and Drogheda. As we left the hotel, he asked us what we were most interested in so he could customize the trip.
Because of the early start we were on the first bus at Newgrange! Michael greeted many of the people who worked there, told us where to go and guided us efficiently through the beautiful visitor center and out to the bus.
I wasn't too excited about visiting the Hill of Tara because I had read that it was sorta like a golf course, but Michael made it come alive with his personal tour.
We are studiers when we travel so some days we don't cover much ground, but Michael kept us on a steady pace for the entire day. I was able to take lots of pictures, my husband was able to look at lots of green things and talk history and we just had a delightful day tooling around the countryside. He was such a gracious host that he didn't fall down laughing when I asked him without thinking if the slits in the Trim Castle walls would have been for guns! He politely chuckled and suggested arrows!! History is not my best subject, obviously, but it was "craic" with our patient guide.
It was 17:45 when we returned to the hotel, so it was a full day tour.
If you have ever gone to visit a friend or relative in a far away place, and they took you sightseeing for a day, well then you know how it felt to be out with Michael - except you have to pay for his services! I highly recommend spending a great day in Ireland with Michael Fox.

Michael provided an outstanding tour of New Grange and Knowth. Although visits to both of these sites are tightly controlled and heavily subscribed, Michael exercised his “local knowledge” to ensure that we arrived at the best possible times. His knowledge of the Boyne Valley is encyclopedic and his charming and low-key manner makes him delightful company. As a resident of the area he takes great pride in its rich archaeological and historical heritage and is delighted to share his knowledge of it. If you can only do one thing while in Ireland, contact Michael and take a Boyne Valley day tour with him – you’ll be glad you did.

On June 16, 2013, my husband Doug and I began our once in a lifetime trip to Ireland. We began with a Boyne Valley Tour (BVT). Our time on this tour with our guide, Micheal Fox, was one of the highlights of our trip.

The BVT with Micheal was a convenient and time effective way to visit and learn about several historical sites in one day. He picked us up at our hotel in Dublin in a comfortable and spotlessly clean car. We had prearranged a tour on the internet with him from Canada. We knew we wanted to visit Newgrange but were unsure what we wanted to do for the rest of the day. No worries for Micheal. He has an extensive knowledge base about the sites to visit in the Boyne Valley and he easily gave us information and suggestions that helped us plan how to spend the rest of our day. With his help we came up with an itinerary on the fly that fit our interests and timetable. He arranged for our tickets to the various venues throughtout the day via cell phone or his other (mysterious) contacts. We had great tickets for tours, including a private tour he arranged at Old Mellifont Abbey. I think he had a leprachan or two helping him....

He left us to our tours with the local guides at Newgrange and Trim Castle. Before he left us with our local guides, he pointed out specific details we should look for on the tours that the local guides did not mention.

A bit more about some of the visits. As above, Micheal arranged a private tour for us at Old Mellifont Abbey. The name of our gude escapes me, but she was a lovely young Irish woman, passionate about how events in Ireland's past continue to be significant. She emotionally described how a document endosed by Hugh O'Neill at the tail end of the reign of Elizabeth I continues to be enormously significant in modern Ireland. The document was signed in the very room we stood in during the tour. We recalled her words when we later visited Northern Ireland.

Micheal reviewed the rich history of each region and site we visited as we travelled. Sometimes, as above, he left us in the good hands of local tour guides that I am certain he (and the leprichans) hand picked. He accompanied us to the other sites, including, the Hill of Tara, Monasterboice, and the site of the Battle of the Boyne. As we travelled from spot to spot, Michael explained the history of the regions. For example, when we visited the Hill of Tara, he led us along an unmarked path and described the impact that entering Tara through this ancient route would likely have had upon folks living in the age of the High Kings of Ireland.

I just don't have time to go through everything we saw that day, but Michael escorted us around without making us feel rushed at anytime, yet we still made it back to Dublin to meet another engagement in the evening. Michael's local knowledge shined throughout the day and made it one of the highlights of our three week tour of the Emerald Isle.

I am the frugal one and I tipped him when done. I recommend any booking with Michael Fox if available, you will see and hear about a slice of the true Ireland; past, present and possibly future that only a local can share. Our tour with him was a true treat, we saw and heard so much about the area of Dublin and beyond the Pale; a travel experience we continue to relish due to Mr. Fox.
His prompt and professional communication with us before our tour was much appreciated.

We are a travel agency in the United States with a single woman client who traveled to Ireland this past May. Our client had a special request with and extensive list of sights she wanted to see in the Boyne Valley. We contacted Michael Fox to arrange a private tour of the Boyne Valley, sometimes when contacting guides in overseas locations it is difficult to recieve quick responses due to time differences. Michael is the exception. We were very pleased with his quick professional emails making it very easy to set up a private tour for our client.
On the day of our clients tour Michael was prompt, meeting her in the hotel lobby early so she could make the most of her day. Michael has great knowledge of the area, was great company , and a safe driver( all things that were important to our client) She felt very at ease and learned a lot about Boyne Valley, making her private tour a day of great memories and great fun. We will highly recommend Michael with great confidence to our clients, knowing they will have a wonderful tour.
