“Super Place to stay”
Reviewed August 13, 2009

I stayed at the hotel last Sunday night just for one night which is more the pity.
From Booking at the central reservations to my Check out I really enjoyed the whole . Was in Westport to climb Croagh Patrick and only booked late in the week and as I said it was a total pleasure. Had a beautiful room. Spotless and luxury to the last word. The most comfortable bed ever and after the climbing of Croagh Patrick it was needed. Also in the room was a beautiful big 50inch TV and in the bathroom a jacuzzi bath along with a stand alone shower. Overall a super room.
Check in was a breeze and the we were given plenty of information on the hotel and facilities. At breakfast the following morning. The staff were really friendly and could not have been more helpful. Overall its been a while since I could have said that about a hotel. Its good to see a hotel that have such friendly and helpful staff. Hats off to all concerned. I will be going back for sure!!

First time I've written one of these -usually don't bother or just forget.
We were shown to our room but there was a slight smell of smoke - staff were very pleasant about changing and gave us a beautiful room. We were on a deal with evening meal included. Breakfast was good with large choice and as a result we didn't need topping up until the evening meal. Unlike other reviewer I thought Table D'ote was excellent with a good variety and always beauifully presented. They ran out of a nice wine that we liked and that was our biggest complaint.
The biggest of this hotel were the staff who really seemed to make an effort to be helpful and pleasant - NOT something you always find!
Rooms really good (very cosy bed) with lovely bathrooms. TV (inc films etc), internet all there. They seem to good deals (as we got) so check these out and make sure you're getting the best possible price. All in all I would DEFINITELY go back - a well run hotel with 10 out of 10 to the HR dept.

Stayed here for my wedding anniversary. Got a great rate in a nice sized room. Bed was a 5ft, and very comfy. Room had a great jacuzzi and shower. Breakfast buffet was good and while not impressed with the selection on the table d'hote menu, the food was good, would like to have been offered the a la carte - but understand why we weren't as we were staying on a 2 nights b&b and 1 dinner. Sinead the manager was very nice as was Ewa the restaurant waitress. Would stay again, really enjoyed our stay.

My husband and I just returned from our trip to Ireland to celebrate his birthday. We had one evening in Westport and got a recommendation from my parents to stay at the Westport Plaza Hotel while we were there. While it cost a little bit more than we wanted to spend for a hotel, we were so pleased with the service and amenities we were glad that we did. It was easy to find, being on the main road when you come into town. There was ample free parking under the hotel, even with a wedding happening at the hotel that night. Our room was spacious and the bed was extraordinarily comfortable! The bathroom had a nice jacuzzi tub, as well as a shower and was quite large by European standards. The staff at the concierge desk was very helpful in recommending restaurants and giving us Mass times for services on Sunday. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would certainly stay there again in the future.

Went here for a week with my family (2+2). Got a family room and the room was plenty big for 2 adults and 2 children. The room was spotless, everything worked, everything looked new. Comfortable queen bed and two singles. The rate was €1560 for 7 B&B and 5 dinners. Let me break that down for you: Breakfast for everybody every day and five dinners – 4 of our children’s dinners were in the kids club (of which more later) and one in the restaurant. The breakfast was very good, a buffet with a (limited) choice of very good food. All of the 5 adult dinners were in the restaurant and they were of a good quality – they were 4 star quality meals, no complaints it was good food – perhaps too rich but that is not a complaint.

The kids (6 and 10) were taken off us at 10.00am and returned at 3.00pm or earlier if you wished. They were entertained and had a lunch (all included). They were also taken off you again at 5.00pm, entertained and fed and returned to you exhausted at 9.00pm. 10 is the maximum age really for the sort of things they did, although they advertised it for up to 12 year olds, our 10 year old was at the limit but still enjoyed it – even sent us away when we arrived at 11.30am to take both of them to the beach. There was an option to allow your children watch a video in a sort of bar area under your supervision after 9.00pm (i.e. lots of children at one end of a room watching a video and adults at the other – with a bar along the side). There was a bit of a Butlens feel to the Tuesday evening when parents were encouraged to get involved with the entertainment (family night) but it was nice. The kids club staff mostly entertained the childern in the hotel, but also took the children to the cinema, beach, to feed the ducks, to the playground – no end of complements for the kids club staff who were excellent.

I was impressed that the in house videos were free (recent to video films), internet was free, in fact everything in the room, (bar the mini bar!), was free. Some hotels sucker you in with a cheap headline price and kill you on extras – in the plaza we found that this did not happen.

The bad bits: the children’s club is Monday to Friday (excluding Friday evening). There was a wedding on Saturday, Thursday and Friday of our stay and the guests were noisy. There may be some quilter rooms. The family rooms seem to overlook the area where guest congregate and you can hear the music and drunk guests but there is double glazing so it is muffled. A light sleeper should choose a different hotel for a weekend stay.

Overall – I would recommend it highly. A good hotel.

We booked a 'deluxe king' on the hotels website, which also specified an additional 'single bed'. Expecting a bit of room to breathe with the extra single (and we all know what it's like to stay in the complete box sized king bedroom), we booked at Eur 198 a night.

CHECK IN
Pleasant enough check in on arrival, I immediately requested a slot for the 'thermal experience' at the Spa Sula, as we'd had a long tiring drive. Strangely we were not informed at this point of the free access to the leisure centre at the sister hotel next door (The Castlecourt Hotel). I only discovered this by reading through the room guide!! The leisure centre at the Castlecourt Hotel includes swimming/jacuzzi/steam/sauna The Westport Plaza website does not make this at all clear either.

ROOM
When we got up to the room, there was a nice king bed, but without a single bed, and in a very small box room (no space at all, quite stuffy, at the front of the hotel overlooking the main road). The noise was significant, & as this was a Saturday and there seemed to be a lot of road traffic and horn beeping.

We complained to the desk that we had not received what we had apparently paid for and were duly phoned back to ask ' how many of us were there?' and 'did we need the extra bed?'. We replied that we had paid for the king and single according to the web description and that's what we expected. We did say that we would accept a reduced rate to stay in the room allocated, or they could put us in the appropriately sized bedroom. At this point, they said they'd phone us back.

We then got a second phone call, asking a similar set of questions, however this time we were told that the rate was non-negotiable and that they would put us in a room according to the description we'd paid for.

The second room was perfect except for the fact that the safe did not have a lock. The beds are extremely comfortable and the free movies/internet very good, with a decent choice of movies. The TV is plasma widescreen. There's tea/coffee making facilities and a mini-bar, but be aware there is no room for storage in it (plus standard move anything, pay for it). No red wine in the bar by the way.

Bathroom excellent. Nice sized separate power shower and jacuzzi bath. Jacuzzi the usual slightly low key as ever in most baths. Goodies include decent body wash/hair wash etc.

SPA SULA

No problem with this, but it is small, and the sense of occasion is low. No music in most of the area, until you go out into the thermal pool outside where there is standard piped spa music emanating from a few strategically placed rocks. Having 'done' thermal suites a number of times over the years, this was a little bit of a non event;. It essentially contains a foot bath, sauna, steam room, thermal pool, and 'salt grotto' which is an unheated room with a number of downsprays of salt water tinted by herbs. A couple of showers (Drench/Caribbean) complete the line up. Far to utilitarian. You can do the Rasul Chamber for extra. Worth the 20 Euro? Well it's probably less crowded than the Castlecourt pool at times, but I'm not convinced.

GENERAL PUBLIC AREAS

Very marble, very clinical. Prefer the Castlecourt for atmosphere.

FOOD

We only ate breakfast. Shown to our seat, the staff did not then attend for tea/coffee/toast orders once sat down. You had to request this service (and I saw this repeatedly), but when they attended they were pleasant and efficient.

Scrambled eggs were over scrambled with milk/cream and rather sickly. Mushrooms tasted tinned. Black/White pudding dry. Bacon/Sausage/Tomatoes/Beans all fine. Usual selection of cheese/ham/yoghurts and grapes/cereals. All looked fine.

CHECK OUT

Fast enough. No quibbles, except for the girl who checked us in was also the girl who checked us out, and she insisted she told us about the Castlecourt leisure centre access when we mentioned we had not been informed of this (she did not). When she asked was the room fine, we replied it was, once we were in the correct room. She then proceeded to tell us that it was a mistake on the website description and that the 'extra single' we shouldn't have got. She then dismissed my observations regards a description on the website stating rooms had a spacious living area, which in the first room, they patently did not. I had merely pointed this out as a further requirement for their web maintenance team to address when they removed the 'single bed' addition to the room description. Suggest she learns the art of not disagreeing quite so wholeheartedly with customers when they are advising of a problem on their websites.

OVERALL

Nice hotel. Reasonable location. But, far too clinical. They need to inject atmosphere. Perhaps a jazz pianist, exotic plants etc. The public areas kind of look empty! Thought the Castlecourt had far more about it.

I will stay at the Castlecourt the next time.

Everythiing in this hotel is a of a very high standard. The staff are friendly and helpful. The rooms are of a high standard with lots of room choices to suit your budget.Air conditioning is standard.Food is excellent, and if you are not very hungry you can have a variety of light meals in the bar.If you feel like something more formal the Restaurent has a wide variety of dishes. There is a well run kiddies club on site. The beauty of this hotel is that a sister hotel is beside it and you can use their facilities as well. There was an excellent evening entertainment programme while we were there, and this is set to run for the Summer.Well worth a visit. We will be back!
