“An experience not to be missed”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 13, 2014 via mobile

Myself and my husband escaped the madness of a hectic life and headed for Clare Island. It was a good distance from Cork but once we arrived we were glad we had made the effort.
I can only describe the lighthouse as a sanctuary where our hosts made us feel completely at ease and nothing was a problem. The view from our room was a 180 degree of Achill Island and it was spectacular. We could lie in our bed and not even lift our heads from the pillow and admire the view.
During our stay we were fortunate enough to have bad weather and relished the wind and rain lashing against the lighthouse while we snuggled up and got royally pampered!!
Dining with the other guest was actually a really enjoyable experience and we met interesting people from all walks of life. The food and wine was
delicious and there was no rush to wrap up the evening.
I had forgotten how beautiful this part of the world was as we walked to the local pub. The locals were extremely friendly and gave is a great insight of life on the island.
My only disappointment was (it's a mall one) that the open fire in our room wasn't in working order, we were looking forward to that.
However, overall this was a five star experience and something I can tick off my bucket list!!

This place is just fantastic. We were on honeymoon around Ireland and booked one night in the Achill view room. We were picked up at the ferry and received the warmest welcome with lovely tea and scones and a tour of the lighthouse. The view from our room was breath taking.
Dinner, wine and breakfast were delicious. The lighthouse is full of little nooks and crannies to explore and our only regret was that we could not have stayed longer. We will be back again soon. Highly recommend this unique experience.

Room Tip: Have a pre dinner drink up in the light house tower and enjoy the views...

We spent a night on Clare Island staying at this wonderful Lighthouse earlier on this week. What an amazing experience and one we will talk about fondly for many years to come. Our hosts Maeve and Gerry were extremely welcoming. A1 scones on arrival - great first impression. Our room, Achill View was exceptional - beautifully furnished and a decent sized bed which is always a bonus! The views across to Achill Island were superb - just being able to sit with a cuppa on the bed and drink in the view......bliss! We walked 12km around the island and stopped off at Sailor's Bar and Hostel for a bite to eat and a few drinks. The owner Karl was extremely friendly, served up a seriously good plate of fish and chips and a bowl of delicious lentil soup and we left on our merry way conscious of building up an appetite for a meal we were confident was going to be worth waiting for. Maeve did not disappoint - each course was a knock out and by the 5th course I thought I was going to combust but we managed to keep going through the cheese plate and petite fours. It was actually a lovely experience not knowing what we were going to get to eat and we never at any point were disappointed. The quality of ingredients and the obvious skill of Maeve & Gerry made this one of the top dining experiences we have ever had! I would encourage anybody reading our review to put this place on your bucket list. Its one of a kind and its rather a cool thing to say you've stayed in a lighthouse - very romantic! Transfers are arranged to and from the Lighthouse so no need to worry about hawking bags around the island. The Ferry trip itself added to the experience, especially as we had never been to Clare Island before. We couldn't get over how friendly everybody we met was, from the guys on the Ferry to the locals we asked for directions at one point from. Hopefully we will be back again one day! Thanks to Maeve and Gerry and their friendly Manager Roie who took our booking. You are definitely one of the West's hidden gems :)

Room Tip: Achill View room the best because of the view - other rooms all very well appointed though.

We stayed in Clare Island Lighthouse over the Easter break. I had seen the pictures and done some research but nothing could have prepared me for how beautiful it was!
The lighthouse itself is very quaint and beautifully maintained - simple and stylish!
Maeve and Gerry were fantastic hosts and went out of their way to make sure our stay was comfortable - hauling bikes into the back of a jeep and making a packed lunch for our trip around the beautiful island!
The room was really cosy and comfortable and the food was amazing - delicious and beautifully presented!
We particularly enjoyed hanging out up in the lighthouse looking out at the steep cliffs and ocean view!
We couldn't have asked for a more amazing experience!
The whole trip was really relaxed!
Thanks Maeve and Gerry for a great stay - we've been raving about it since we left!!

In October, I spent two days on Clare Island at the Lighthouse. What a spectacular experience. The lighthouse is perched above dramatic cliffs and stunning views of the Atlantic ocean. Sheep abound in the beautiful rolling hills above the oceans and on the grasslands.

Cora and Roie are amazing managers. They do it all at the Lighthouse---from hosting their guests, providing delicious gourmet meals, maintaining the premises to ensure unrivaled accommodations and sharing their invaluable insight regarding the history of the Clare Island and available activities. I've stayed in many lovely places throughout my travels, including the fabulous Ashford and Dromoland castles. The uniqueness of the Lighthouse--given its stunning surroundings, interesting history, and blissful isolation from the rest of the world--places it in a league of its own. If you have an opportunity, the Lighthouse is an experience not to be missed.

We are seasoned, spiced and intrepid travellers, but even we 2 trembled with a degree of trepidation as we surrendered ourselves to the strong arms of and unnegotiable trust in the ferry men who transported us from Roonagh Pier at Louisburgh across a tumultuous Atlantic swell to the rocky landing platform and wild winds of Clare Island on December 6th 2013.
We were greeted effeciently on the pier by the local female taxi driver and transported unceremoniously to the Lighthouse. which loomed. glinting and gleaming in the Winter sun atop of vertiginous cliffs at the virtually abondoned north end of the island.
That was only the beginning......
this is a very special and secret place.
I cannot tell you too much about what happens here.
Not everybody may be emotionally equipped to handle this experience but for those who can, this is a life and love affirming sojourn that etches a mark upon the soul of that select and cogniscent few who can acknowledge possession of such an animus.
This is undoubtedly the Ultimate Romantic Getaway !!!!!!
Thank you Roie xxxx

We visited Clare Island in Mid October with friends and stayed in the Lighthouse for two nights. The latter has had a checkered history since being stood down by the Commissioners of Irish Lights in 1965 and it's latest owner has renovated and converted the structure into a boutique hotel perched up on the windy edge of this lovely island. The latest Keepers of the Lighthouse are Cora and Rory - a delightful and highly competent couple whose every waking moment is devoted to the well being and comfort of the Hotel's guests.
Cora was waiting to welcome us when we climbed up and out of the Clare Island ferry boat and, having stowed our bags and coats in the back of the hotel's four wheel drive, proceeded to drive the scenic and twisting three mile track that leads to the Island's Northern tip and to the Lighthouse.
We arrived in time for dinner where we were introduced to the the hotels other guests - a warm and friendly couple from the South of the USA . The dining room, with it's single table seating up to eight people, became one of the focal points of our stay where we enjoyed breakfasts and splendid five course dinners with ingredients sourced from local growers and producers..... all imaginatively prepared and professionally presented by Cora and Rory from the adjacent kitchen.
Living and sleeping accommodation is spread over the lighthouse and we were given the Tower House which consisted of a downstairs stone flagged living room, toilet/shower room and atrium with a spiral black steel stair ladder up to the stand-alone double bed within the truncated top of the original 1816 lighthouse tower. Sleep quality was not great thanks to a very firm orthopedic quality mattress but we felt very snug and secure listening to the Atlantic wind blowing against the tower.
The hotel must have a large energy footprint and high running cost to guest ratios ..... which probably account the 5 star pricing rates for accommodation and wine [the hotel is comfortable with great service, imaginative decor and design but would struggle to achieve luxury status designation ]
Two days proved to be the correct length of stay - the latter was an enjoyable if somewhat expensive experience - and for many folk probably sufficient to be removed from the outside world and from television and 'phone land-lines. Wifi was provided but connectivity was problematic and would have been a problem when we were involved in the commercial world.....
