“Stay at Hotel Westport to savour the full flavour of Mayo!”
Reviewed August 10, 2012

HOTEL WESTPORT is one of those rarities in Ireland, a highly- successful hotel, still in the hands of the family who founded it. We stayed there soon after it first opened forty years ago, so we decided it was time to return and enjoy the delights of picturesque Westport town and the stunning scenic surroundings of County Mayo.

Leisure breaks are what Hotel Westport is most famous for, often associated with activities such as golf, bridge or bowling. The 20m swimming pool is a big draw for all. Family Breaks are most popular during school holidays when Cubs Corner, Panda Club and Teen Territory swing into action, covering all age groups. The Ocean Spirit Spa has treatments and pampering sessions providing a less strenuous option.

My wife Karen and I chose the laziest package of all – the Golden Holiday/ Over 50s. This is the most popular mid-week option, judging by the number of bald heads and/or Groom-Out-Grey rinses among our fellow guests. It’s a value for money break involving 3-5 nights’packages of B&B accommodation with four-course dinners in the award-winning Islands Restaurant. Other breaks include a Murder Mystery in October and a regular Magic/Storytelling Dinner Show throughout the high season.

Because the euro exchange rate favoured guests from the UK -- and the weather was holding up pretty well -- we opted for an extra night so that we could fit more of the amazing attractions on offer in North Mayo, from driving around the coast of ACHILL ISLAND to visiting the new TITANIC Centenary Memorial south of Crossmolina.

However, literally next door to the hotel is one of Mayo’s most famous Visitor Attractions, WESTPORT HOUSE which is an Irish national treasure largely designed around 1780 by the greatest architect of his era, James Wyatt. The current generation of aristocratic Brownes (who are descended from Grace O’Malley the Pirate Queen) have welcomed four million visitors since they opened their stately home to the public. In the extensive grounds, there’s an award-winning Pirate Adventure Park, an Activity Centre, Caravan Park and everything else that can make the place pay its way. It's a wonderful day out!

Back to the hotel: With many of the ground floor walls already full of award plaques, the Hotel Westport does not really need another trophy from me, but it deserves the highest rating I am awarding it here on TripAdvisor. Here's why:

We LOVED the cosy, Irish Country House atmosphere and the smiling welcome from the staff which was sustained throughout our stay. They are well trained by General manager Declan Henegan and Marketing Manager Eithne Cosgrove. The Reception staff used my name every time I passed, so I am returning the compliment to Front Desk Manager Mary O’Reilly and her team – Tina, Kathleen, Aine,Noreen,Sarah and new girl Aisling.

We ENJOYED excellent bar food on the nights we were not dining at Islands Restaurant, personally served by bar manager John McNamara who is from tiny Clare Island. We saw his 'homeland' off Roonagh Quay when we went for a drive along the southern shore of Clew Bay past the holy mountain of Croagh Patrick to little Louisburg which has grown a lot since our last visit.

MY SOLE COMPLAINT about Hotel Westport was the size of the portion of lamb on one of the dinners. It was far too big!

Stayed there over the weekend with a group of friends, this is our 3rd time returning as a group and i've stayed with my husband numerous times. All the staff were so friendly and helpfull and there is always such a warm atmosphere. The rooms are always immaculate and the food is amazing! Great location for a "staycation" Hoping to return before the end of summer with my husband and 2 kids. Well done guys, you never fail to impress.

Yet again Hotel Westport fails to disappoint! It's the main reason I stay there every time I visit Westport (and given that it's one of my favourite places to visit) I return regularly!. The professional and friendly staff to greet you on arrival at check in, start off each stay with a feel good factor and I just know that I am going to enjoy every minute of my stay in the hotel. This time proved no different. Our room was spacious, clean and very comfortable, with a large bathroom. Although we arrived early from Dublin, they were able to facilitate an early check in, which was greatly appreciated, given that it was very busy in the hotel. I visited with my partner and we made the most of their fantastic leisure facilities and relaxing spa area, again which are staffed with professional and friendly personnel. Breakfast on both mornings set us up for the day with plenty of variety to cater for all. We ate in the hotel restaurant on one evening and were served up an excellent meal again with efficient and friendly service. Being located very close to the town centre, with a lovely short stroll by the river made our stay more enjoyable.
I would highly recommend this hotel if you are looking for professional and friendly service, with a relaxing atmosphere and clean and comfortable accommodation.

Myself, husband and our 2 year old are just back from 3 nights in this hotel. We stayed in one of their superior rooms which was brilliant. Very spacious, with river view and it had a fridge (which was handy for provisions for the child). We found the hotel staff to be extremely friendly and helpful. The bar could have done with some upgrading but apart from that the food in bar and restaurant were good. The swimming pool was great. The hotel was able to organise a babysitter for us with short notice so we got time for ourselves. All in all a great experience, mainly due to the hotel's family friendliness I would say. We would definitely return.

My husband and Myself was very disappointed and will not stay in the hotel again. The room was not as advertised. There was a stink in the room with cobwebs and staff not friendly at all. Breakfast was poor. Did not feel relaxed after our stay.

Myself and my partner, along with another couple booked this hotel for a two night stay. We booked the hotel through it's own website and it stated on it that the hotel was 4 star rated by the AA. I have no idea how the AA gave this hotel such a high rating. We drove from Dublin and arrived at the hotel early as we intended to have lunch there. On arrival we asked at reception if we could check in after our lunch and they said the room would b ready for us in 45 mins, We were happy with this. The lunch we had in the hotel was average and very over priced for what we got, soup and sandwiches, cost over €45! An hour later I inquired if the room was ready, we were told not for another half hour. We had planned activities in the town and we were hoping to get changed and head out as soon as we could. Two hours later we were finally given our room. The reception staff were highly inefficient and were slow to communicate to us when we could actually get our room. They also seemed to not know about the hotel's facilities as one girl didn't know if the hotel had wi-fi! The alarm bells should have rung when we were checking in as the reception desk had a sign saying 'ask about our room upgrades'. When we got to our rooms I knew why this sign was there. The rooms were very dated, tv was ancient, decor old and grubby, lamps had layers of dust, wall were tea and coffee facilities were was covered in tea stains. The bathroom was filthy, pubic hairs found at sink and bath area. The shower hose and head were grimy and caked with dirt. The walls of the bath area had stains all over them and the shower curtain was like a cloth and absolutely stank. To add to all of this a tile came off the bathroom floor and when I alerted the staff to it no apology was made and no effort was made to fix it and no other room was offered to us. Our friends room was just the same, filthy grubby and dated. There was no way I was going to pay another €40 euro to this hotel just to get the type of room we should have been given if this is a 4 star hotel. I went to use the pool area later on in our stay and this proved to be just as disappointing. The ladies changing room was filthy, hairs and dirt all over the floor and several of the lockers were broken. the pool area itself wasn't clean, again hairs and dirt all around, the steam room needed cleaning too. I don't know how the pool got voted best kept pool at all. The location is probably the only thing that is good about this hotel as it is just a short walk along the river to the town. Thankfully Westport is a lovely town with lots to do and great bars and restaurants so we didn't have to spend much time in the hotel. We will definitely be going back to Westport but not to this hotel.
