“Have standards slipped?”
Reviewed August 18, 2013 via mobile

We would stay at Knockranny regularly and have written good reviews on the food in the past as this is why we stay there. Prior to going this month I had read the odd review about poor service and food quality but put it down to a one off, not to be, the food was ok, nothing to put a finger on ( apart from a joke isalad starter, few leaves, an olive, 2 wafer thin sliced of carrot) but we had a better meal in a nearby Hotel. Service pleasant enough but massive waits between course while a reduced staff set op for breakfast resulting in almost 3 hour dinner. I will think again about returning as Ive always found that although the Hotel advertising goes on about the views the bedrooms although large and well furnished are dark with no views and as I said it was always about the evening meal!!

Attended wedding recently and was had expected it to be a little better. The hotel is lovely and the location is fab. The few disappointing things included, no extra potatoes for anybody, no extra veg at any tables. It would not have been much to ask to have a bit of extra veg for people if they wanted it.

In relation to the starters, it was presented with little imagination. Bit more thought could have been put in.

The deserts came out and were nice. They were short of milk at our table as only 1 jug for a very big table.

All in all, hotel is lovely but expected a bit more from it as it is a nice bit dearer than sister hotel down town.

I arrived there for a wedding at the hotel. The service was really good even though they were very busy. I was given a corner room on the top floor, and was very satisfied, it was smallish but I was on my own and that was not a problem. The whole stay was great I was never disappointed with the service, either the front desk, the bar or the dining room. They managed to cope with a very large (350 guest) wedding reception and I would recommend this to anyone. And if I could figure out how to get the comfiest bed I have ever slept in into my luggage I might well have done it.

Nice hotel, we were there for a wedding so I figure the mediocre, darkish room was assigned to us as we were wedding guests and wouldn't be spending long in the room. We paid top dollar however! It felt like a room that needed a facelift, the bathroom especially needed revitalisation. If we were there for a couples getaway I would have requested a room change. The bar staff need to learn how to smile...all other staff without exception were great and very welcoming. The guys in the bar don't proactively look after you, I had to call and nearly walk the full length of the bar for assistance even though on both occasions the guys could see me trying to get their attention, they were busy talking to each other ignoring customers. Not good and they need to Smile!
Breakfast was superb, love that it is cooked to order, relaxed pace, no attempt to hurry you on, I like that! Great views, make sure to get a window table at breakfast and settle in with the paper and good coffee and freshly cooked breakfast. Loved it.
All in all would return, request a bright room and enjoy the great food and views.

Is anyone there? One has to wonder whether Knockranny reads these reviews; they should, its all here in previous reviews on Trip Advisor, but I'll summarize: The location is stunning, the views are beautiful. We stayed in a Courtyard Deluxe room and it was serene. The bed so comfy, the bathroom positively Grecian and it was spotless. We did wonder why they used a cheap supermarket brand of coffee in their rooms, and why milk, sugar, etc. weren't on a tray instead of lined along the edge of the desk but that was minor. We also loved the spa and spent a good deal of time there. The big issue was the food/food service. It's almost like the staff are so busy conducting themselves in what they believe is a superior manner that they forget that it's all about the customers. It appears that there are several "departments" involved in food production and service and they don't actually communicate with each other. For example, one evening we were dining in the Brehon Bar we noticed a man coming from the kitchen with a tray of hot food for two. He set the tray down on a sideboard and walked away. Ten minutes later (I kid you not!) a waitress came along, saw the tray of food, picked it up and served it to an adjacent table. Needless to say, the diners promptly called her back and said the food was cold. From where we were sitting we could see that the waitress had been called by the bar manager to do some task (incidentally he is still bullying staff, see earlier reviews) so that her attention was split between too many areas. Another afternoon we went for afternoon tea and I explained that I was vegetarian before ordering. The waiter laughed and said would cheese sandwiches do? At dinner in the dining room I clearly explained that I was vegetarian, and ordered fish (I wanted to make sure there was no beef bouillon in the stock); the fish came, beautifully presented, but covered in bacon bits!! So disappointing. This could be a wonderful place to stay. Staff need more guidance, direction and management; i'm sure the intentions are good but the service is a disaster.

Room Tip: If you are not going for a room with a view, select a Courtyard Deluxe - other worldly!

We staying in Knockranny for two nights over the August bank holiday weekend. On check in reception was extremely busy with a wedding taking place but the staff were friendly and efficient. There were two weddings taking place over our stay which resulted in noise until the early hours in the corridors and from the front of the hotel. We had children knocking on our door at midnight on the second night. A call to reception did sort out the disturbance.

Our first room was dark looking out at another wall of the hotel so we requested a better room, possibly with a view. We were told the hotel was very busy but were given another room to the front of the hotel. This room had a view but a tiny window and again was dark. The interior of the rooms is very dated, toiletries are basic and there is no mini bar. Over all a very disappointing room considering the price we paid. I believe there are recently renovated rooms which if I had of know would have paid extra for this. Rooms were of a 3 star standard.

We had dinner included in our package which was excellent (fine dining) even if the service was inconsistent; we had to top up our own wine and the service seemed rushed with very little wait between courses.

The spa is beautiful and modern and we enjoyed a visit here after cycling the green way.

On the plus side the staff are extremely friendly and approachable and breakfast included table service with made to order hot options. The views from this dining room are also very impressive.

Over all due to the price we paid this hotel was not good value and we left feeling like we could have gotten a better standard of room else where. (€410 B&B for two nights and one meal)

Room Tip: Ask for a recently renovated room. Also if there is a wedding taking place ask to be situated away f...

Stayed for a week in July, would recommend the deluxe suites as they are huge, separate bedroom & sitting room and have equipped kitchenette. Very large bathroom, jacuzzi bath with TV and beautifully lit with soft lighting [not good for putting on the make up tho ladies] I believe their standard rooms are quite small so make sure to upgrade if your staying for a few nights or if you've kids.

We upgraded to the penthouse for a treat and where not disappointed, beautifully decorated with all the luxury you'd expect. Beautiful glass dome dinning area with unspoiled views of Croagh Patrick. A room just for the double jacuzzi itself.

Food in the restaruant is five star, fine dining at its best and their Table d'hote menu changed daily, which was great if you where staying for a few nights. Staff where super efficient & courteous, however didn't interact much or where not over friendly, perhaps this is a decision by management.

Breakfast a different story, would have been much easier had they put on a full buffet style, but instead you had order from a menu, so the whole process was longer than it needed. Management should address this.

Location is perfect if you want to be out of the hustle & bustle of the town, and if your doing the greenway the hotel will kindly store your bicycle & you can enter the Great Western Greenway just outside the hotel. Handy! Tho if your doing the Greenway I'd recommend you start from Achill not Westport or Newport as its only the last part that's most scenic!

Kids are not allowed in the pool a real pity. Majority of guests seemed to be 50+ couples, which didn't help create a buzz or atmosphere. But if your looking for peace & quiet then perfect.

Two weddings where on the week we stayed, and apart for the car park looking busier, you'd not have known so that's good. BTW place looks amazing for weddings, sneaked a peek at their ballroom, wow, stunning.

Thought their wine was expensive, €7.50c a glass to me was just a little on the expensive side. So I just stocked up the fridge in the room myself. Nice treat of a qtr bottle of port/sherry in the room but again suited to 50+ clients as who else would drink that!

Would definitely return and recommend :)

Room Tip: Coose a deluxe suite, larger & have views of Croagh Patrick. Court yard suites are much smaller...
